When Magic Man steals Jake’s delicious sandwich, Finn and Jake must defy laws of space and time to get it back.

Tropes

  • Ascended Extra: Mr. Cupcake plays a major role in Jake's defeat of Magic Man.
  • Black Comedy Burst: While making his sandwich, Jake grabs a bird from the window to use as an ingredient.
  • Bowdlerise: Censored versions of this episode remove Jake boiling a lobster alive for its soul.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: All of the ingredients Jake uses are mundane, except for the soul of a lobster.
  • Breather Episode: After five consecutive episodes with more serious plots note  we have a lighter episode where Finn and Jake deal with another of Magic Man's pranks.
  • Call-Back: As in "Video Makers" and "All the Little People", we see that Jake fears that Mr. Cupcake and Lady may have some romantic connection.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • BMO's new software from his visit at the MO factory is displayed.
    • Marceline's costume in this episode was previously seen hanging up in "Marceline's Closet".
    • Jake uses pickles from the pickle jar Prismo gave him in "Jake the Dog" to make the sandwich.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Jake is driven to tears after he fails to make a second sandwich and it looks like all their options for dealing with Magic Man are used up. Fortunately for him, it turns out sadness is the way to get through Magic Man's time bubble.
  • For the Evulz: Magic Man steals Jake's sandwich and then places himself in a bubble to slowly savor Jake's reactions once he reaches the bottom.
  • For the Lulz: The real reason BMO helped Jake was to try out his skateboard trick for fun.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Some of the entries on Bubblegum's contact list can be read, albeit printed backwards because of the holographic device she's using.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Magic Man could do nothing but stare while Jake delivers an epic punch to his face due to his time-dilation spell.
  • I Fell for Hours: Taken to a literal extreme; Magic Man places himself in a bubble where time moves super-slow.
  • Imagine Spot: Jake keeps himself sad enough to move through the time bubble by imagining his funeral. Then he imagines Mr. Cupcake going out with Lady Rainicorn, which eventually just makes him mad. Jake gets sad again by having a mental conversation with the imaginary Mr. Cupcake, telling him to take care of Lady if he died and that he values their friendship.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: This is one of the few episodes where Magic Man gets serious payback for his hijinks. After stealing Jake's perfect sandwich and forcing him to undergo a riddle that drove him to despair, Magic Man gets punched by Jake, is blown up by Bubblegum's missiles, is elbow-dropped by giant-demon Marceline, and has his face skateboarded by BMO.
  • Megaton Punch: Jake delivers an epic punch to Magic Man.
  • Moon Logic Puzzle: Magic Man's bizarre riddle is a rare non-video game example: "When your face shows 7:20 / When green leaves turn brown / The only way forward is down / Then you'll see the wetter, the better." The answer is "You have to be sad to move at a normal speed through the time bubble": a clock's hands at 7:20 resemble a frowning face, leaves go from green to brown in autumn, which is often a time of mourning, Jake literally has to feel "down" (dejected) to move forward through the bubble; and the wetter from tears his face is, the faster he moves. Jake lampshades the ridiculous nature of the puzzle, saying that the riddle is "wordplay at best" and pointing out that no one has ever called 7:20 "sad face".
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Jake making a perfect sandwich.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Magic Man realizes that Jake figured out his riddle and is about to punch him, his eyes widen in fear.
  • One-Winged Angel: Invoked. Marceline transforms into a demonic form order to release demon juice. It doesn't work.
  • Riddle Me This: Magic Man claims the only way to break through his time-slowing spell is to solve his riddle: "When your face shows 7:20 / When green leaves turn brown / The only way forward is down / Then you'll see the wetter, the better". The answer is that when Jake gets sad enough, he's able to move at normal speed inside the time bubble.
  • Serious Business: One of the silliest plots of the whole series centers around the theft of a sandwich, which Jake mourns as if it was a lost family member. And nearly all the main cast share his concern and pitch in to help him get it back instead of telling him he's being ridiculous.
  • Tempting Fate: Jake makes a half-assed second sandwich, and tries to convince himself it'll be good. Then he bites it and it's awful.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Literally, since Jake is a dog. Just as he finishes his well-prepared sandwich, Magic Man takes it away from him.
  • Year Outside, Hour Inside: Magic Man steals Jake's perfect sandwich and traps it in a magic bubble where time moves slower on the inside. A slowed-down conversation between Finn and Jake that takes a few seconds lasts five hours when they finally remove themselves from the time bubble.
