(Madame Bonfamile and her friend Georges Hautecort have started to make out her will, and their conversation is being heard by Edgar from the servant's quarters)
Bonfamile: As you know, I have no living relatives. And, naturally, I want my beloved cats to be always well cared for. And, certainly, no one can do this better than my faithful servant, Edgar.
(Edgar perks up and listens in, giddy at the implications)
Georges: Edgar? Adelaide, you mean to say you're leaving your vast fortune to Edgar? Everything you possess? Stocks and bonds? This... This mansion, your country chateau, art treasures, jewels, and...
Bonfamile: Oh, no, no, Georges. To my cats.
(Edgar's face drops)
Georges: To your cats?
Edgar: (in a wheezy whisper-yell) CAAAATS?!
Bonfamile: Yes, Georges. I simply wish to have the cats inherit first. Then, at the end of their lifespan, my entire estate will revert to Edgar.
Edgar: Cats inherit first! And I come after the cats? I mean, after... It's-It's noir fair! I mean... each cat will live about twelve years! I can wait... A-And each cat has nine lives! That's... four times twelve, and multiply by nine times... No, it's less than that. Anyway, it's much longer than I'd ever live!
