Basic Trope: An animal thought to be male is female, found out by her being pregnant or having babies.
- Straight: Alice has a cat called George, but when George gains weight, Alice takes the cat to the vet, to be told that the cat is actually a Georgia, and she is pregnant.
- Exaggerated: Alice doesn't find out that Georgia is female until she actually has kittens.
- Downplayed: Alice realizes Georgia is female before she becomes pregnant.
- Justified: Alice cannot tell male cats from female cats.
- Inverted: Alice raises a chick that she thinks will become a hen that will lay eggs, but turns out to be a rooster.
- Subverted:
- Alice starts to suspect that George is actually female when she notices he's pregnant, but then finds out that he really was male the whole time — it's a case of Mister Seahorse.
- Alice takes George to the vet, where it turns out that George has indeed put on weight. The vet puts George on a diet.
- Double Subverted:
- Whoever told Alice that George was male was mistaken too - or lying to mess with her.
- Alice brings George back after an unsuccessful diet where the vet realizes that the cat is Georgia and pregnant.
- Parodied: Georgia has plenty of Tertiary Sexual Characteristics. Alice still mistakes her for a male.
- Zig Zagged: George is seen gaining weight and later, s/he has lost the weight and is seen with kittens. However, s/he is never seen nursing them and Alice still calls him/her George, so it is unknown if s/he is the kittens' father, mother or if they're even related.
- Averted: No animals are mistaken for the other gender, or there are no animals other than humans.
- Enforced: The writers have given Alice's cat the name George, but have decided they want her to have kittens, because they would make great merchandise.
- Lampshaded: "But I thought he ... she was a boy!"
- Invoked: Bob lies about Georgia's gender to Alice.
- Exploited: Alice files a Frivolous Lawsuit against the shop that sold her the "tomcat".
- Defied: Alice asks an expert what her cat's gender is before naming him/her.
- Discussed: "I have heard that some people mistake female pets for male pets until they get pregnant. We have to take this cat to the vet."
- Conversed: "I noticed on TV whenever an animal gets pregnant, they either thought she was a boy or thought she was sick."
- Implied: Alice has a cat named Georgia. "She" is seen mating with some stray cat, but never gets pregnant.
- Played for Drama: Alice doesn't have the money to raise Georgia's kittens.
