Basic Trope: A character is tasked with differentiating between identical siblings by at least one of those siblings.

  • Straight: Twin brothers Bob and Charlie go up to Alice and ask her to guess which one is Bob and which is Charlie.
  • Exaggerated: Bob and Charlie go every where together and ask every person they meet to choose which one they think is Bob and which one is Charlie.
  • Downplayed: Alice is hanging out with Bob and Charlie at their home when she goes to the kitchen for a glass of water. One of the twins comes up behind her and covers her eyes with his hands, telling her to "Guess who."
  • Justified: Bob and Charlie were told by their older sister Diane that they are so identical, no one can even tell them apart. They ask Alice to try to prove Diane wrong.
  • Inverted: Bob and Charlie, in the middle of an Identity Breakdown, demand Alice tells them which one of them is Bob and which one is Charlie, as they are no longer sure.
  • Subverted: Bob and Charlie are actually part of a Hive Mind and thus are technically the same consciousness.
  • Double Subverted: Alice points out that existing in separate corporeal forms for so long has made Bob and Charlie develop different Character Tics, making it possible to actually differentiate between the two.
  • Parodied: Polar Opposite, fraternal twins Bob and Charlotte ask the great sleuth Alice if she can tell which one is which, wholly believing they can stump her. She correctly guesses who's who before they can even finish asking her to guess.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Bob and Charlie have developed Identical Twin ID Tags to avoid ever being confused for one another and therefore don't need to see if anyone can differentiate between them.
  • Enforced: Bob and Charlie are contestants in a game show in which identical siblings try to stump the audience for a cash prize.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Alice asks Bob and Charlie to test her ability to differentiate between the two of them.
  • Exploited: Evil mastermind Ellie reveals her final trump card against heroine Alice. She has hooked up Unknown Relative Bob and One True Love Charlie to a Death Trap and has given Alice only enough time to save one before they both die.
  • Defied: Alice ignores Bob and Charlie's request.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Alice has a picture of who she believes to be her boyfriend Charlie hanging up on her wall. Charlie one day sees it and asks her "What is this?" Alice replies, "It's a photo of you, obviously." Charlie replies back, "Is it, now?"
  • Deconstructed: Bob and Charlie ask Alice if she can tell which one is which, but instead of answering, Alice asks them why it even matters if she or anyone else can tell, so long as they know who they are. This leads Bob and Charlie down separate paths of self-discovery as they try to understand themselves more.
  • Reconstructed: At the ends of their journeys, they ask Alice one last time as confirmation of their growth, assured that she will not fail.
  • Played For Laughs: Trickster Twins Bob and Charlie come up with increasingly elaborate disguises and set-ups to try to confuse Alice when they ask her to pick out which one is Bob and which one is Charlie. Alice never is fooled and the twins try harder each subsequent time to stump her.
  • Played For Drama: Bob and Charlie have been treated by others their entire lives as if they are Single-Minded Twins and it has made them both co-dependent, hollow shells of people. They ask every person they manage to form a connection with if they can tell them apart, hoping for anyone to see them as individuals and Alice is their last hope.
