Basic Trope: Being transgender brings up internal and external drama.

  • Straight:
    • Alice, a transgender girl, is bullied by her peers and angsts over whether she counts as a real woman.
    • Alice is having a hard time finding a job because she’s transgender.
  • Exaggerated: Alice goes through a Deus Angst Machina directly related to her being trans, even though her surroundings seemed inclusive.
  • Downplayed: Alice still faces hardships for being transgender but it's fairly minor.
  • Justified: Transitioning isn't as easy as picking a favorite color, it's a serious and life-changing process with large amounts of external and internal stigma.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob, a cis boy, is highly effeminate and faces trouble with misplaced transphobia and people insisting he can't be cis.
    • Alice is doing better than her friends and colleagues because she's transgender.
  • Subverted: Alice turns out to be a cis woman and the bulling started from false rumors and misunderstandings gone horribly wrong.
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: Alice claims she's just a boy In Touch with His Feminine Side even though she's had top and bottom surgery, been on HRT and voice therapy for years now, uses she/her pronouns, and had her name legally changed. Someone encourages her to take that one tiny step out of the closet... only to learn she genuinely considered herself an effeminate cis boy, and thought the drama she faced was just related to her gender expression rather than transphobia. She's now convinced there's a slight possibility she may be a trans girl and is freaking out over it.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Nobody, not even Alice herself, cares about her transition.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice is fortunate to have enough self-esteem and confidence to not listen to transphobes any more than she'd listen to someone telling her the sky is green and the grass is blue.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Ambiguous Gender Identity
  • Played for Laughs:
    • Immediate Self-Contradictions related to Alice's internalized transphobia.
Alice: I'm sick of all this "inclusive" talk. I have yet to see ANY proof that so-called "transgender" people are anything but mentally ill.
      [beat]
      Bob: And you are?
Alice: A person of unknown gender making sure she keeps an open mind.
    • Alice frequently goes on transphobic rants out of nowhere, which absolutely terrifies her inclusive friends and pressures them to get in an argument with her whenever this happens... until they realize her rambling is formulaic enough that they can just keep a pre-recorded message to play whenever she's about to say something extremely transphobic.
  • Played for Drama: The drama involves Alice's friends trying to adapt to her new life, fearing how much it would hurt her if they treated her wrongly.
  • Played for Horror: The story brings up a lot of Realism-Induced Horror about Alice's struggles and urges to treat her dysphoria at the cost of her health. When it's too hard for her to buy gender-affirming surgery, she does it herself, which risks killing her.
