Basic Trope Description: Non-military characters are depicted as obstructive or even outright hostile towards the military.

  • Straight: In The War of the Tropes, everyone who isn't one of them themselves seems to hate the military: the politicians engage in nothing but budget-blocking, the economy is only out for their own gain and the normal citizens are all Dirty Cowards or Suicidal Pacifists.
  • Exaggerated: Everyone in The War of the Tropes is just out to get the military: The politicians discuss nothing but abolishing the army while a vicious aggressor is at the gates, economic cartels decide not to allow any resignation since they could plan to join the military and the normal citizens scream for preventive execution as soon as someone shows some signs of the wish to be a soldier, and soldiers are believed to go to war because they want to murder innocent people.
  • Downplayed: While the military has some support from some civilian citizens, most still hate them.
  • Justified: The last war is just recently over, and Troperia is still rebuilding. Everyone is far too afraid to think of a new war.
  • Inverted: In The War of the Tropes, everyone in the military is in it for the violence and the Rape, Pillage, and Burn, commits horrible crimes without a flinch, laughs sadistically all the time and believes themselves to be the biggest badass that ever lived.
  • Subverted: While the threat of war is just imminent, nobody outside of the military takes it serious yet. But when the war breaks out for real, citizens are convinced and join the army eagerly.
  • Double Subverted: Only to prove far too fearful to fight at the front lines, leaving it to the heroes to save the day.
  • Enforced: The War of the Tropes is an Author Tract by a militaristic author.
  • Averted: The civilians express all shades of opinions towards the military that exist in Real Life: from support to hatred.
  • Zigzagged: Some civilians hate the military, some outright love them, and some are in the middle.
  • Parodied: Alice and Bob, both five-year-old kids, play that they are fighting knights (with sticks) in the sandbox. Everyone freaks out at that sight and rants at them whether they "want to become soldiers" when they grow up.
  • Lampshaded: "Join the army, they said. They didn't say everyone else would hate you."
  • Discussed: "Civilians...they just don't understand us." "They don't want to understand us."
  • Conversed: "Come on, you just have a quite special way of life."
