Playing With / Stat Sticks

Go To

Basic Trope: A weapon carried or equipped by a character because of the stat bonus it provides, rather than any direct combat use.

  • Straight: In Tales of Troperia VIII, Moki is a Bare-Fisted Monk who cannot use weapons in battle. However, he can equip weapons. He equips the Sword of Might, which adds +3 to Moki's Strength, the stat that derives his bare-fisted damage.
  • Exaggerated: No matter which weapon Moki equips, his attack animation changes in such a way that he never touches the enemy with a weapon.
  • Downplayed: Moke uses the blade for a couple of special moves, but the attack bonus applies even for his basic unarmed strikes.
  • Justified:
    • Moki is engaging in Loophole Abuse that only the one who bears the sword of kings may defeat Evulz. The sword is still in its scabbard and can only be drawn by those of royal blood which he is not one of.
    • The weapon is enchanted to amplify its bearer's strength, and as such its bonus applies to all physical attacks.
  • Inverted: All weapons apply statistical penalties when wielded by a character outside of the class which uses them, defeating any purpose.
  • Subverted: Moki can equip the weapon, but the bonus only applies when it is actually wielded in battle, removing the advantage.
  • Double Subverted: However, its used-as-an-item ability is quite useful.
  • Parodied: This conversation:
Hiro: Hey Moki, why are you carrying that sword if you never use it?
Moki: I can't explain, but I feel like I punch harder when I have it on me.
  • Zig Zagged: Moki equips the sword, but cannot wield it, which is the only way to get the stat bonus. However, one of Hiro's abilities takes the adjusted Strength of the active party in order to determine damage, which Moki's sword's bonus still applies to, so it still worth wielding.
  • Averted: You can't equip weapon that your class doesn't use actively, period.
  • Enforced: The game is based on an Anime in which Moki carries the sword, but never uses it.
  • Lampshaded: When Moki gets his sword back after a No-Gear Level, he proclaims "ah, I feel stronger already!"
  • Invoked: The artificer enchants the weapon in such a way that merely having it benefits its wearer.
  • Exploited: Moki carries around a bunch of weapons at once to get the accumulative benefits of all of them.
  • Defied: Moki actively uses the weapon and remarks that he can't benefit from its effects without using it.
  • Discussed: When you equip a weapon to Moki, he asks why you would bother but figures you must have a good reason.
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Laughs: During the Very Definitely Final Dungeon, Hiro is incapacitated and Moki must grab the Sword of Plot Advancement. After a badass cut scene that shows Moki swinging the sword around, he is shown sheathing it and preparing to fight the Big Bad bare-fisted.
  • Played For Drama: ???
