Basic Trope: An application is denied.

  • Straight: Alice's immigration papers are denied by Bob.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob rejects Alice's papers 10 times.
    • All papers are rejected by Bob.
  • Downplayed: Bob marks Alice's paper with a "review pending" stamp.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is a terrorist.
    • Alice's paper is poorly-written or lacks key features.
  • Subverted: Bob stamps "Approved" on Alice's immigration papers.
  • Double Subverted: He then shreds them.
  • Inverted: See Subverted.
  • Parodied: Bob stamps Denied on a check.
  • Averted:
    • Alice does not file an immigration paper.
    • Immigration is not discussed.
  • Defied: See Subverted.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob denies Alice's paper. Alice then tries a different country, where Carl approves her paper.
  • Enforced: The creators are anti-immigration.
  • Lampshaded: "Your credentials seem off, Alice."
  • Discussed: "So, ya gonna deny me or something?"
  • Conversed: "You see that part where Bob denied Alice?"
  • Invoked: "Breaking news: Terrorist Alice Troper found on the run."
  • Exploited: Bob is being paid by Emperor Evilz to send Alice back.
  • Played for laughs: Alice's paper details her career as a clown as the most significant factor of her life, and Bob denies it.
  • Played for drama: Alice's paper is denied for personal reasons.
  • Played for horror: Alice is being targeted by the Mafia back home; her paper being rejected forces her back where she can be found by the Mafia.
  • Implied: Alice leaves the country in one episode. The next episode, she is back home crying.
  • Deconstructed: Alice's home country is a dictatorship that imprisons her for trying to escape.
  • Reconstructed: Alice is released from prison and tries to escape again.
