: A bizarre and irrelevant puzzle that has the sole purpose of blocking a player's progress.
- Straight: The door to the Tomb of the Ancients is locked until Alice solves the Towers of Hanoi outside
- Exaggerated: Alice refuses to enter the (open) Tomb of the Ancients without solving the puzzle first.
- Downplayed: The puzzle, when completed, tells Alice how to open the door. It can be bypassed the second time around.
- The Ancients intended the puzzle to be a test of worthiness for anyone trying to enter.
- The puzzle was intended by the designers of the Tomb to allow only those who know the magic combination of pieces to pass, but time and Alice's cleverness have exposed enough of the inner workings of the device that it becomes a standard logic puzzle.
- Inverted: The puzzle makes sense, it's the solution that's bizarre. Alice can retrieve a key from above the door using a cat, thirty pounds of nails and an inner tube.
- Subverted: The Towers of Hanoi and prominently displayed outside the Tomb. Alice walks by them and pushes open the door.
- Double Subverted: ...And is promptly skewered on a spike trap that the puzzle would have disarmed.
- Parodied: The Tomb is decorated like a classroom, and Alice must solve simple math problems on the blackboard for the door to open.
- Zig Zagged: The puzzle, when completed, tells Alice how to open the door. It can be bypassed the second time around, but the puzzle must be in the solved state for Alice to be able to open it from the inside, unless Alice tweaked the nose of the God statue that will only be encountered five levels later. Alice then breaks the fourth wall by cursing the programmer, after which she walks out the side exit.
- Averted: There is no door, and the only obstacles are thematically-appropriate monsters.
- Enforced: "Something should block Alice here, but players hate fetch quests and Alice can't fight."
- Lampshaded: "With all these stupid puzzles, you'd think the Ancients never managed to invent keys!"
- Invoked: The Ancient architect insists on a puzzle-protected entrance, saying that all tombs need such a feature.
- Exploited: Alice always carries around her trusty Book of a Thousand Puzzles for just such an occasion.
- Defied: The king of the Ancients makes it a crime to lock a door with such a simple "key".
- Discussed: "Wow, a real ancient tomb! Hope we don't come across any stupid logic puzzles; I've always been terrible at those."
- Conversed: "Why do developers insist on putting puzzles like this in their games? If I wanted to think, I'd be doing something productive."
- Deconstructed: The Tomb has been ransacked because anyone with a book on logic can get in...
- Reconstructed: ...but other challenges, ranging from the physical to the magical, provide ample protection from would-be tomb raiders who aren't fully prepared.
