Playing With / Singing in the Shower

Go To

Basic Trope: Somebody sings while taking a shower.

  • Straight: Bob sings to himself while taking a shower.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob performs death-metal vocals in the shower for several hours straight, continuing even after the hot water runs out.
    • Bob doesn't just sing in the shower, but plays instruments as well.
  • Downplayed: Bob simply hums or whistles a tune quietly in the shower.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is an aspiring singer, and he gets his practice in while showering, since no one else is around.
    • Bob's shower has acoustics that make Bob's voice sound much better than it does out of the shower.
  • Inverted: The shower has a built-in speaker that plays an acapella track whenever the water is turned on.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob is in the shower. He breathes in as if he's about to start singing, only to sneeze instead.
    • From our perspective of the shower door, we can hear operatic singing coming from inside. However, once the camera pans in through the door, we can see that Bob is silent, and is listening to a performance via a shower radio.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Bob starts singing after he finishes sneezing.
    • Bob begins singing along to the radio.
  • Parodied: Bob starts shyly singing lyrics from an operatic song in English under his breath. Cue a montage where Bob's performance becomes more and more elaborate, his voice becomes more powerful and booming, he starts to sing in Italian and slowly goes from being naked with Censor Suds to wearing a suit and holding a cane in the shower and eventually, he belts such an Incredibly Long Note that he shatters the glass doors on the shower, the windows and the mirror.
  • Averted:
    • Bob does not sing in the shower.
    • Bob does not shower in the story.
  • Enforced: "So, Bob is a guard at this shady facility, right? And the hero sneaks past him while he's in the shower? We need to have him sing in the shower so the audience can hear who's in there without us having to film the actor naked. He's uncomfortable with that."
  • Lampshaded: "Why does Bob sing in the shower when we have a karaoke machine downstairs? I swear he loses track of time in there when he does that."
  • Invoked: The doors to the public shower stalls have no locks, so Bob sings loudly to make sure people know not to come in.
  • Exploited: Someone who is avoiding Bob hears him singing in the shower and takes that as an opportunity to run/sneak past without him noticing.
  • Defied: Bob questions whether or not people are home when he's in the shower, then decides not to sing.
  • Discussed: "The new shower sure makes your voice sound like a powerhouse, doesn't it?" "Yeah, I could sing in there all day if running out of hot water wasn't a thing."
  • Conversed: "I keep seeing characters singing in the shower, but I honestly don't think it's that awful."
  • Played for Drama: Bob's singing prevents him from hearing a home invasion going on outside the bathroom.
  • Played for Laughs: Bob sings like a foghorn after someone dropped a toy squeaker down the funnel, infuriating everyone in the house.
  • Implied: During a scene in the kitchen, muffled, echoed singing can be heard coming from upstairs. After a bit, Bob enters the room with slightly wet clothes and wet hair.
