Basic Trope: A character possesses the ability to shapeshift, but their clothes don't.

  • Straight: Alice can turn into a snake, but loses the ability to wear clothes because of her size.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice turns into an elephant and all her clothes rip.
    • Alice's clothing always comes off regardless of what form she takes.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice turns into a dog, but her clothes can't, but are still on her.
    • Alice has some Clothing Damage after turning into a werewolf, but the clothes still stay mostly intact.
    • Alice shapeshifts to disguise herself as Bob. The clothing stays on her just fine, but she appears to be Bob wearing Alice's clothing and so the disguise doesn't work as well.
  • Justified:
    • Shapeshifting affects only the person shapeshifting, not any items the person was carrying.
    • Alice can turn into living creatures, but clothes aren't alive.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Contrary to Alice's expectations, the clothes change as she changes.
    • Alice initially can't shift her clothes, but then a more experienced shifter shows her how to do it.
  • Double Subverted:
    • The clothes' new form cannot be worn in that state.
    • Even after extensive training, Alice just can't shift her clothes.
  • Parodied: Alice can turn into clothes.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice's clothes slide off or are destroyed when she shapeshifts, but when she shifts back the clothes are magically on her.
  • Averted:
    • Alice does not shapeshift.
    • Alice's shapeshifting does include clothing.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Well, there she goes turning into a snake again. I'll go pick up her clothes so she doesn't lose them."
  • Invoked: Alice becomes a nudist for when she decides to learn how to shapeshift.
  • Exploited: Bob is attempting to cause Defeat by Modesty and dares Alice to shapeshift into a stronger form.
  • Defied: Alice shapeshifts only into forms that can contain her clothes. She then develops Magic Pants that can shift with her.
  • Discussed: "Is this the part where the main character shapeshift and her clothes fall off?"
  • Conversed: "Huh. You'd think those clothes would just shift with her. Don't see that in a cartoon that often!"
  • Implied:
    • The scenes where Alice shapeshifts are not shown onscreen, but she is shown wearing a different outfit every time she's done transforming.
    • Alice is shown in snake form for a while, and after returning to human form she's Naked on Arrival.
  • Played For Laughs: After Alice is done with some shapeshifting heroics, she turns back to normal and faces her loving audience... naked.
  • Played For Drama: Alice is worried about turning into her stronger form because it will damage her clothes. And right now she's in a situation where she could really stand to change.
  • Deconstructed: Alice outright refuses to use her power because she doesn't want to be naked in public, and Magic Pants are not an option.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Alice is extremely careful not to shift back to human until she's in private. This is sometimes inconvenient, but she can makes her powers usable while maintaining her dignity.
    • Alice gets carefully controlled exposure therapy to get more comfortable with being naked. She still doesn't really like doing it, but she manages.
