Basic Trope: An old person who acts rude.
- Straight: Alice is 78 years old, yells at people for minor slights, and refuses to do anything that anyone asks her to.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice is 108 years old, half of what she says is profanity, and she beats anyone who offends her (which is to say, everyone) with her cane.
- Alice is an Evil Old Folk.
- Downplayed:
- Alice is 60 years old and surly, but not overly so.
- Alice is an Obnoxious Entitled Housewife; Still got the attitude, but not a complete and utter geezer.
- Justified: Alice has always been a Jerkass, and now she is protected by respect for the elderly.
- Inverted
- Alice used to be very temperamental, stern, or standoffish — but she's mellowed out in her old age.
- Alice is exceptionally polite because she believes old people should set an example for youth.
- A very young Alice is a Jerkass, or The Bully. At worst she's an Enfant Terrible.
- Subverted: Characters expect Alice to be a jerk, but she's actually sweet and kind...
- Double Subverted: ...so that she can be an even bigger jerk to them after they've let down their guard.
- Parodied:
- Alice acts more like a rebellious teenage girl then a senior: she talks back to her caretakers and makes passive-aggresive comments, and saying "You can't tell me what to do!" when she's punished for it.
- Alice does this as a college senior.
- Alice is 700 years old and every word out of her mouth is "fuck," which she says an average of three times per second.
- Being rude has given Alice Complete Immortality.
- Zig-Zagged: Alice has major mood swings.
- Averted:
- There are no old people in the story.
- There are old people in the story, but they aren't more or less polite than the middle-aged and young people.
- Enforced: The writer hates old people, so he makes Alice a Jerkass.
- Lampshaded: "Stop being an asshole!" "DON'T DISRESPECT YOUR ELDERS, KID!"
- Invoked: Alice thinks she is Surrounded by Idiots.
- Exploited: Bob is reticent about reaming out someone even though he really wants to, but he introduces them to his grandmother so they get yelled at anyway.
- Defied:
- Alice says something incredibly rude ... then realizes it was wrong and apologizes.
- Alice makes a point of being polite to everyone.
- Barbaric Bully Flash Young decides to stand up for his friends by giving Alice "The Reason You Suck" Speech, and without his brooklyn accent to boot:
Flash: Lady, you're old enough to be my great-grandmother and I'm pretty sure I'll be the one suffering all kinds of hell if I so much as frown at the shit you're saying in front of a crowd, but I swear to God, if you ever insult me or my friends like that again, I'll make you eat your fucking teeth. Got that? - Discussed: "Damn, that old lady was rude."
- Conversed: "You ever notice how old people are rude?"
- Implied: Alice's children and their own children talk extensively about her potential and realized criticisms of them before and after visiting her.
- Deconstructed:
- Alice has no friends because she has driven everyone away.
- (From Defied #3) Flash 100% makes good on his words with a solid left cross once Alice gets way too mouthy.
- Reconstructed:
- ...everyone, that is, but her Vitriolic Best Buds who delight in insulting each other.
- Flash is charged with assault on a senior, which just gives Alice a lot more leverage to bully and insult Flash.
- Played for Laughs: Alice is an insult comic.
- Played for Drama:
- Abigail is Alice's ten-year-old niece and wanted to know Alice better. Alice's first words to Abigail are "Sit down, you fucking airhead!" and she doesn't get any better from there at all, not even when someone else points out that it's beyond the pale to insult a little girl. Abigail gets her heart broken.
- Alice's grandkid starts taking after her personality thinking if she can get away with being rude he can too, much to her son Carl's anger, and calls her out on her bad personality being a bad influence.
- Played for Horror: Alice is a 78-year-old Serial Killer with a particular hatred for pretty young women who she always labels "worthless cunts" even when she is trying to pass herself off as a harmless grandma.
