Basic Trope: Turning basic resources into advanced resources is a major part of gameplay.

  • Straight: You need to make an oven out of clay or smelted iron, combine wheat and apples in the oven, then fuel the oven using wood, to create apple pies. The pies can then be traded with a merchant for rare ores.
  • Exaggerated: You need to smelt iron, build a lost-wax casting mold out of clay and a blueprint, cast the iron into the shape of the an oven, put the wheat in a mill, put apples through a corer and slicer, milk cows and put the milk through a butter churn, put sugarcane in a press, then put wheat flour, sliced apples, butter, and sugar (in specific proportions) into an oven. Then you dry wood into firewood and use the firewood to fuel the oven. This creates an apple pie. Trade these pies to a merchant for cinnamon to increase the quality of your pies...
  • Downplayed: You trade apples for rare ores.
  • Justified:
    • You are a baker or trader in-game.
    • It's a Factory-Building Game. Half the fun is setting up the most efficient way to bake apple pies. The other half is finding a way to make the biggest, tastiest, and most expensive pies out of what you've got.
  • Inverted: You need to disassemble various gadgets and mechanical devices, extract their components (springs, computer chips, etc.), and sell those components to make a profit.
  • Subverted: Crafted ovens and raw ingredients can also be traded directly for rare ores without ever needing to do any baking.
  • Double Subverted: You trade ovens and raw ingredients to a merchant. In return, they give you... apple pies. And tell you to do the baking yourself next time.
  • Parodied: You put the apples, wheat, and as much of a tree as you can cram into the trading chute (and get rare ores in return).
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • You buy apple pies from an in-game shop using coins.
    • Everything is just quantum mechanics-ed into Programmable Matter at an Ore Refinery, and how much you have is expressed as a dollar value.
  • Enforced: "According to market research" (says the boss), the most popular games include detailed chains of crafting things, like smelting metal and making raw materials into food.
  • Lampshaded: The description for the oven includes "Obligatory crafting system".
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Roasted and baked foods are worth more for trading than their raw counterparts. Thus, over the long term, making apple pies maximizes one's profit.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: An NPC in-game talks to you about how much they love baking, and regularly sends you recipes in the mail, one of which is for apple pie. The apple pie recipe has "The rare ore merchant loves these!" scrawled in the corner.
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: You give apples and wheat and a few coins to an in-game baker. A few hours later they give you apple pies in return.
