Basic Trope: A new person joins a close-knit social group with limited or no introduction and assimilates well no matter the circumstances of his joining.

  • Straight: Alice, Bob, Dan, Eric and Francine are introduced to Lee, who gets along with all of them equally well almost immediately afterward.
  • Exaggerated: The gang and Lee act like they've been friends for years, despite only having known each other for five minutes.
  • Downplayed: The gang is a bit cold to Lee, but warms up more quickly than expected.
  • Justified: Lee is naturally outgoing, cheerful, and easily able to make new friends, which goes a long way toward getting people to like him.
  • Inverted: The gang hates Lee on sight without even getting to know his name.
  • Subverted: The gang seems to like Lee at first, until his flaws start coming to the fore. His many, many flaws.
  • Double Subverted: The gang still likes him in spite of his flaws.
  • Parodied: Lee wears a nametag so the others can remember his name more easily, and treats his initial time with the group like a networking opportunity.
  • Zig Zagged: Lee is able to get Alice, Dan and Eric to like him, but Bob and Francine hold out.
  • Averted: The gang doesn't warm up to Lee quickly, if at all.
  • Enforced: The gang and Lee are being overseen by Mrs. Gerta Long, who has ordered them to work together on their class project.
  • Lampshaded: "I have a feeling Lee is going to be sticking around for a while. Let's do our best to make him feel welcome."
  • Invoked: Lee grooms and wears his best clothes when coming to meet the group, in the hopes that it will help things go more smoothly.
  • Exploited: Lee is seeking to betray the gang, and uses their goodwill to ingratiate himself as quickly as possible to find out their weaknesses.
  • Defied: The gang shows a fair amount of trepidation toward Lee before he is able to win them over.
  • Discussed: The gang has a brief huddle over whether or not to include Lee in their activities.
  • Conversed: "Lee seems like the kind of guy who wants to make friends a little too easily."
  • Implied: Lee is part of the gang, but is either left out of or doesn't catch on to most of the gang's in-jokes.
  • Deconstructed:
  • Reconstructed: Lee provides an important attribute the group lacks, allowing him to forge his own identity within the social circle.
  • Played for Laughs: Lee is a walk-on guest star whom everyone treats like an old friend, despite him never having been on the show before.
  • Played for Drama: Lee's ambiguous nature divides the gang on how to deal with him. Some want to befriend him while others just want to kick him out.
