Basic Trope: Someone misunderstands the meaning of a sign because part of it is obscured.
- Straight: Spencer is looking for food in the fridge. He sees a can labeled "FOOD" and opens it up, then eats the contents. Closer inspection reveals that it said "DOG FOOD".
- Exaggerated: Spencer is looking for food. He sees something a box of something labeled "food", but it actually says "Radioactive material. Opening this would be a foolish decision."
- Downplayed: The "G" is covered, so it just says "DO FOOD". Spencer thinks that it must be telling him to eat it.
- Justified: The "DOG" part of the label is much smaller than the rest, and there was a price sticker over it.
- Inverted:
- Turns out "DOG" wasn't actually part of the label; it was just dirt that accumulated on it.
- Spencer understands the obscured "FOOD" label perfectly. But for some reason, when he sees that the full thing says "DOG FOOD", he's confused over what the container has.
- Subverted: It doesn't actually say "DOG FOOD". It says "PEOPLE AND DOG FOOD", and it contains both.
- Double Subverted: It actually says "UNSUITABLE FOR PEOPLE AND ONLY DOG FOOD"
- Parodied: The label "don't open this" is concealed to say "open this".
- Zig-Zagged: Spencer keeps revealing more text on the label that changes the meaning.
- Averted: Spencer doesn't have a misunderstanding over a sign being obscured.
- Enforced: "Why would Spencer eat dog food?" "I don't know, say that he couldn't see the 'DOG' part of it."
- Lampshaded: "This is DOG food? I thought it was just FOOD!"
- Invoked: Logan puts a sticker over the "DOG" part to cover it up.
- Exploited: Logan wants to humiliate Spencer, so he does this as a prank.
- Defied: Spencer makes sure he's reading the entire label clearly before opening containers.
- Discussed: "Did you really think I'd have a can that just says FOOD with nothing else?"
- Conversed: "Cartoon characters really need to check the labels on these things."
