Playing With / Overly Generous Time Limit

Go To

Basic Trope: A Timed Mission in a video game which has much, MUCH more time than you will ever need.

  • Straight:
    • In the final battle of Tropers vs. Evulz, you must defeat Emperor Evulz within 15 minutes. As long as you figure out his weak spot soon enough, you can kill him in as little as 5-7 minutes.
    • There is a level in Tropers vs. Evulz that has to be beaten in less than 10 minutes. It can be beaten in as little as 4, unless the player takes their sweet-ass time.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Evulz is a Zero-Effort Boss with a time limit of 18 hours.
    • The game gives you a timed mission, but time is so generous, you can literally do a bunch of missions in the meantime, before coming back to this one, and still complete it in time.
  • Downplayed:
    • Evulz is a reasonably difficult boss, but with a lot of practice, it's very easy to finish with quite a bit of time left.
    • The time limit for the level seems rather strict, but there is a hard-to-find shortcut at the start that takes you straight to the end.
  • Justified:
    • The creator wants to include a sense of urgency, but did not play-test the boss fight to see if the time limit was reasonable.
    • Evulz is trying to accomplish a goal during the fight. Unfortunately, whatever he's trying to do takes a little while.
    • 15 minutes is the in-universe legal minimum time limit for a Plan B bombardment.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Evulz has a One-Winged Angel form.
    • The timer doesn't compensate for when the bomb arm-locks (EG: you have 35 minutes to detonation, but you can't disarm the bomb after the 30 minute mark)
    • You're given a reasonable amount of time to beat Evulz and most players will only have a small amount of it remaining when they finish, but even if the time runs out, nothing actually happens since another character disarmed the bomb while you and Evulz were busy fighting.
  • Double Subverted: Clipped-Wing Angel
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: The time limit appears to be extremely short, but there's extra time power-ups scattered everywhere. However, Evulz is a Marathon Boss.
  • Averted:
    • The time limit is reasonable.
    • There is no time limit.
  • Enforced: There was not enough space left on the cartridge for the level to get its own dedicated time-limit, and had to reuse the time-limit of a different level.note
  • Lampshaded: "Eight minutes left?! Goodness...What was the point of that time limit?"
  • Invoked: The creator deliberately makes the time limit much longer than it needs to be.
  • Exploited: Gamers engage in some Anti Poop-Socking, knowing they have all the time in the world.
  • Defied: The game is heavily play-tested to avoid this problem.
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed: "That final boss could have been a lot more intense. Maybe shorten the time limit a bit?"
  • Implied: Bob beats the final battle of Tropers vs. Evulz with several minutes on the clock remaining.
  • Deconstructed: The final boss is considered to be too easy and disappointing, with the huge time limit being cited as one of the main reasons.
  • Reconstructed: Some other gamers point out that even though the time limit was way too much, it helped add a sense of drama and panic to the climactic battle.
