Basic Trope: Everyone is governed by a single authority.

  • Straight:
    • A planet is united under a single government.
    • An entire species has a singular culture.
  • Exaggerated: Everyone in the galaxy is not only ruled under the Federated Stars, but shares the same culture.
  • Downplayed:
    • Earth is ruled by a central government, but has no impact on the story directly.
    • Earth's independent nation-states answer to a central authority more powerful than the real world's U.N.
  • Justified:
    • Due to a common enemy, all of Humanity agreed to unite to pool their resources for a common defense.
    • An ancient conspiracy manages to take power and conquers civilization.
    • An alien species has a hive mind, which results in a singular order.
    • With the collapse of all other governments, the last surviving one fills the power vacuum.
    • National leaders decide that it's better and easier if everyone works together, with the common goal of helping humanity.
    • The world governments proved to be inept at stopping threats due to more concern with laws or outright being the threat, thus a need for a new order was called.
  • Inverted: The Order falls apart and splinters into a variety of nations.
  • Subverted:
    • Independents attempt to break away from the Order by moving out of its sphere of influence.
    • The Planetary Government has no real power, and has little influence on the lives of its people.
    • The Order is divided into several factions, each one struggling with each other.
  • Double Subverted:
    • The Order expands it's sphere to encompass the Independents.
    • A crisis causes the once weak central government to gain real power.
    • One of the factions manages to defeat the rest, becoming the singular rulers.
  • Parodied: The universe is united after hearing the music of a high school rock band.
  • Zig Zagged:
    • While technically having several independent nations, the planet is de facto ruled by a single powerful man. Using his business and social influence, the Ruler can control all these nations covertly.
    • Everyone shares the same religious beliefs. However, they are not united under a single temporal power.
  • Averted: Despite being set in the Future Space Opera Universe, Earth has yet to be united under a single authority.
  • Enforced:
    • The writers are rather pessimistic (or paranoid) about such an idea for whatever reasons. They use the trope to show it such a situation could be very terrible.
    • The creator of a work uses the trope to demonstrate how peaceful and prosperous the world has become.
    • A show lacks the time to go into detail about an alien culture. So the creative team presents the best representation of that culture as best they can under these restraints.
    • Planet of Hats
  • Lampshaded: "It's silly to assume everyone of the same species have the same culture."
  • Invoked: In order to join The Federation, a species must unite into a single government.
  • Exploited: A villain decides to use the fears of this trope to incite a civil war.
  • Defied: Our heroes must stop the conspiracy to create a singular Order.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: The Order is unable to coexist with any other society, culturally assimilating everyone they contact. This results in conflicts with other species, who feel that their cultural values are endangered.
