Basic Trope: Someone doesn’t realize that they’ve transformed.
- Straight: Bob gets turned into a dog, but doesn’t realize.
- Exaggerated:
- The universe itself gets transformed, but nobody notices.
- The transformation is excruciating. Bob still doesn’t know what’s happening.
- Downplayed: Bob can feel some aspects of the transformation, but decides not to care much about it.
- Justified:
- Bob couldn’t feel any of the transformation.
- Bob was focused on something else.
- Technically speaking: you transform as you grow up, from embryo to fetus to baby to toddler to kid to ...etc, so Bob just assumed the growth of dog ears was as normal a part of growing up as losing your baby teeth.
- Bob transforms so frequently he subconsciously ignores any discomfort from the process because he's gotten used to it.
- Bob turned into a dog while he was unconscious or asleep.
- Bob also suffered Identity Amnesia in some form prior to turning into a dog, so he just assumed that he's always been a dog.
- Inverted: Painful Transformation
- Subverted:
- Bob doesn’t seem to notice he’s turning into a dog, but he suddenly looks in a mirror and gets worried.
- Bob was only pretending not to care about his transformation to keep it hidden.
- Double Subverted:
- ...Because his hair is a mess today.
- Bob only said he didn’t realize what was happening to him to avoid embarrassment.
- Parodied: Even though the transformation is incredibly obvious, Bob is somehow unaware of what’s happening to him.
- Zig-Zagged: Bob has been transformed many times; sometimes he notices, sometimes he doesn’t.
- Averted: There is no transformation.
- Enforced:
- Can be a potential Rule of Funny.
- A character in a toy-based series is shown not to realize his transformations as a way of portraying how effortless it is for the players to switch his form in real life.
- Lampshaded: “Why is everyone staring at me like I grew a tail?”
- Invoked: ???
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: Alice immediately informs Bob that he’s transforming.
- Discussed: “Uh, Bob... you look a bit different than normal.”
- Conversed: “I’m pretty sure I’d notice if I were getting turned into an animal.”
- Played for Laughs: Bob tries to act like a human even after he’s been turned into a dog. Hilarity Ensues.
- Played for Drama: Bob is trying to avoid the local dog catcher.
- Played for Horror: After Bob discovers that he’s transformed into a dog, he is horrified. Some And I Must Scream might be in effect as well.
