Go To

Basic Trope: A character shapeshifts while telling a story or describing something, especially if they're unable to speak in the first place.

  • Straight: Alice sees a large monster in the forest and tries to tell people about it. She starts by briefly transforming her hands to look like the monster's claws, and her teeth briefly get sharper.
  • Exaggerated: Alice outright shapeshifts into something heavily resembling the monster in order to tell everyone what it looked like.
  • Downplayed: Alice mostly plays charades instead of outright shapeshifting - for instance, she holds her fingers in front of her mouth to look like fangs, and then makes a "claw-like" position with her hands.
  • Justified:
    • Alice cannot speak (or is speech-impaired). She's using her shapeshifting abilities to show them what it looked like.
    • Alternatively, Alice is just unable to describe what the monster looked like. She thinks a visual description would be more helpful.
  • Inverted: ???
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Nobody ever shapeshifts while telling a story.
  • Enforced:
    • To have Alice find a way to describe something without actually speaking.
    • To make it harder for other characters to figure out what Alice saw.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Bob suggests that Alice try acting out what she saw if she can't describe it.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Alice decides to outright tell everyone what she saw.
    • Alice cannot speak, so she either writes down or draws what she saw instead of trying to act it out.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "She can change her shape, but still can't talk?"
