Basic Trope: A character hears of another character's feelings for them, resulting in the former catching feelings for the latter.
- Straight: Alice confesses to Bob. After hearing this, Bob starts to develop feelings for Alice, too.
- Exaggerated: Bob instantly develops feelings for Alice as soon as she confesses.
- Downplayed:
- Bob does develop feelings for Alice after she confesses, but it takes a long time and they develop a solid partnership first before moving on to anything romantic.
- Bob had a crush on Alice before this, but thought she was out of his league and refused to acknowledge it until now.
- Justified: Bob is oblivious to his own feelings for Alice, and her confession caused him to realize them.
- Inverted: Bob starts hating Alice after she confesses to him.
- Subverted: Alice confesses to Bob thinking that this trope will happen, but he doesn't develop feelings for her...
- Double Subverted: ...at least, not until Alice has moved on from him.
- Parodied: Alice confesses to Bob, who instantly falls in love with her. Then she takes it back, and Bob promptly starts ignoring her, his feelings gone.
- Zig Zagged: Alice confesses to Bob. The writing then flip-flops on whether or not Bob likes her back.
- Averted: No one confesses to anyone, and if they do, it doesn't necessarily trigger any revelations of feelings.
- Enforced: The writer wants to wrap up the romance arc.
- Lampshaded: "She loves me! Then I must love her back!"
- Invoked:
- Alice thinks Bob doesn't love her back, but confesses anyway in the hopes that he will eventually.
- Bob convinces himself that he has feelings for Alice after her confession.
- Exploited: Charlie, wanting to make Bob's life miserable, tells him Alice is in love with him. She's actually not, and Bob develops unrequited feelings for her that make him miserable.
- Defied: "I'm not developing feelings for Alice just because she told me she likes me!"
- Discussed: "Alice, tell him you love him! He'll love you back, that's how it always goes in romance stories."
- Conversed: "Here's the big Love Confession! Oh, and here's the part where he realizes he loves her because she told him she loves him. Classic."
- Played for Laughs: Alice confesses. A big, dramatic, cheesy montage comes where Bob realizes his feelings.
- Played for Drama: Bob doesn't like Alice back after she confesses, and she angsts about how she ever thought telling him about her feelings would make him love her back.
- Deconstructed: Alice confesses to Bob. Bob quickly realizes he has feelings for her, and they enter a relationship. However, he realizes later on that his feelings for her are shallow and brought on by the heat of the moment, so their relationship suffers.
- Reconstructed: They manage to repair their relationship and base it on something genuine.
