Playing With / Lazy Husband

Go To

Basic Trope: A man sits around the house while his wife does all of the work.

  • Straight: Bob sits in his special armchair to watch the game. Meanwhile, his wife, Alice does all of the house work.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is never seen out of his armchair even once.
  • Downplayed: Bob sits in his armchair while Alice does the housework, but only because he's tired after a long day at work.
  • Justified:
    • Bob has a disability that prevents him from being able to help out around the house.
    • Bob is a sexist pig who expects the woman to do all of the housework.
    • Bob is a Manchild who can't do anything, so his marriage to Alice is of the Parenting the Husband variant.
    • Bob, being the primary breadwinner, works hard outside the home (or thinks he does), seeing his home life as a chance to relax whilst Alice keeps the house.
  • Inverted: Alice sits around the house while Bob does all of the work.
  • Subverted: Bob is seen lounging around on the couch while Alice is working. She then berates Bob for just sitting there doing nothing, only for him to promptly get off his butt and obediently get to work...
  • Double Subverted: ...but after that's done, he goes right back to lounging around and grumbles under his breath about how annoying that was to do.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
  • Enforced: The producers insist this is relatable for the average American family.
  • Lampshaded:
    • Alice: "Bob, why don't you ever get off your lazy butt and help me out here?!"
    • Bob, internally: There she goes, urging me to help with the housework. Sigh.
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice quickly gives Bob an ultimatum to do more housework.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • Bob dislikes doing housework because he believes it is tedious, tiresome, and unenjoyable. Rationally (that is, to enhance his well-being), Bob should either do activities that are either enjoyable or less costly. However, if he chooses to sit in his armchair, he'll get slammed by Alice for being lazy / inconsiderate. No matter what he chooses, Bob suffers in the end.
    • Men and women alike are incentivised to eschew marriage due to the "lazy husband" stereotype. The former to avoid the negative connotation; the latter to avoid undesirable partners.
  • Untwisted: Alice and Bob are sitting on the couch sighing in exhaustion. Alice cleaned the whole house, while Bob picked up a few items.
