Basic Trope: Silence is ominous.
- Straight: Alice and Bob are walking through the woods, where one can ordinarily hear many noises from animals and fairies. It's absolutely silent. A few minutes later, they're attacked by a werewolf.
- Exaggerated: Alice and Bob are Walking the Earth, including forests, cities, seas, and everything in between. There are no sounds anywhere. Shortly after this is established, they're attacked by something.
- Downplayed: Alice and Bob are walking through the woods. The only sound they can hear is wolves howling. A few minutes later, they're attacked by a werewolf.
- Justified: The werewolf had killed all the animals and fairies beforehand.
- Inverted: Alice and Bob are battling their way through the woods. When the noises stop, it means they've finally killed everything aggressive and can take a breather.
- The local Mad Bomber complains about the environment being too quiet... Which, coming from him, means it really is safe and nice and he's about to make some noise and turn it unsafe in short order.
- Subverted: Alice and Bob are walking through the woods, there's no noise at all. They hear some rustling in the bushes, which is just a harmless bunny.
- Double Subverted: Then a werewolf is looming over them from behind, and chases them.
- Parodied: Alice and Bob are walking through the woods and it's too quiet...so Bob pulls a tuba out of Hammerspace and starts "playing" the loudest song he knows.
- Zigzagged: ???

- Enforced: The author originally breezed over the quiet parts of the story, but the producer, who has had experience with these kind of situations, insisted they be emphasized.
- Lampshaded:Bob: I don't like this. There should be some noise.
- Invoked: Dan wants to have a dramatic entrance to surprise Alice and Bob, so he uses his ability to disable sounds around him to set up the ominous tone.
- Exploited: Bob and Alice train everyone in their party to prepare for an attack if they can't hear sounds.
