Basic Trope: A work's depiction of what was then the future, but now is the present or past, features significantly more advanced technology than what we actually have.

  • Straight: Bob's Adventures, a show made in 1970, has an episode that depicts the year 2010 as a futuristic world full of shiny metal buildings, casual interstellar travel, and Ridiculously Human Robots.
  • Exaggerated: The episode is only set 5 years into the future, but still has all of those things.
  • Downplayed: The year 2010 isn't significantly different from reality, aside from the presence of sentient robots.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: The episode's level of technology is practically indistinguishable between the 1970s where it was made, and the 2010s where it is set.
  • Subverted: In the episode, Bob is shown a vision of 40 years into the future, and sees a futuristic world with spaceships, robots, and aliens everywhere, which turns out to just be a future-themed theme park he will be visiting at that time.
  • Double Subverted: The theme park is on Mars, which people can casually travel to from Earth.
  • Parodied: Advertisements announce that the episode of today will feature the exciting and futuristic "World of Tomorrow". A calendar shows that it's literally the world of "tomorrow", as in exactly 24 hours after the episode aired.
  • Zig-Zagged: The future of 2010 is shown to have robots, spaceships, and aliens, but they're only props at a theme park, located on on Mars, that people can casually travel to from Earth, which was only colonized thanks to assistance from time travelers, from the year of 2020.
  • Averted:
    • The episode has a reasonable depiction of the future of 2010, with some significant advancements that did happen between the show's creation and the actual year 2010. It even manages to pinpoint the exact year there would be a recession during the 21st Century, making perhaps either the luckiest guess or the biggest evidence that whoever made this show is 100% a time traveler.
    • The future sequence is set in the year 50000, which is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
  • Enforced: "People are excited about how the new millennium will look like! How about we make an episode about it so we can show them how it could be?"
  • Lampshaded: "Is this how the future will look like? That might be a stretch, but it looks cool!"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Those old TV shows always had crazy ideas about what the year 2010 and beyond would be like. But we only got time travel, ray guns, and that alien invasion."
  • Implied: The episode doesn't explicitly state any year, although some details hint that it's set around the 2010s.

In the distant future of 2010, we'll have links back to I Want My Jet Pack!
