Basic Trope: A character is shocked at how much another has grown during puberty.
- Straight: Twelve-year-old Alice arrives at school and is shocked to find that her classmate Bob, who was previously very short, is now seven inches taller than her.
- Exaggerated: Bob was initially so small he could be mistaken for a third grader, but now, he's 6'11 and muscular.
- Downplayed: Alice laments that she hasn't grown at all during summer, but Bob has grown an inch.
- Justified: Truth in Television; growth spurts are common during puberty.
- Inverted:
- Bob moves away to a different state, when he moves back years later, Alice is shocked to see he's gotten shorter... somehow.
- In 6th grade Bob is out of shape, but when Alice sees him again in 9th grade, he's lost weight.
- Subverted:
- Alice hits puberty during the summer vacation, and she wonders how Bob has changed, only to be surprised when she finds he hasn't changed at all.
- Bob appears to be taller than Alice when they meet up after summer break, but it's just because he was wearing big shoes.
- Double Subverted: But it turns out Alice was wearing heels too! When she takes them off, Bob is taller than her.
- Parodied: Bob has become a giant, but all Alice says is, "You've grown!".
- Zigzagged:
- Averted: Bob only grows a little bit during the summer and it's barely noticeable.
- Enforced:
- Lampshaded: "What the heck?! You're taller than me now?!"
- Invoked:
- Exploited: Bob's muscles have developed, meaning Alice can use him to intimidate bullies.
- Defied:
- Discussed: "Yikes! I must have shot up by three inches at least! What's Alice gonna say?!"
- Conversed: "Why is that Alice character so surprised that Bob has grown? He was the right age for a growth spurt."
- Implied: Alice is seen looking at Bob, gasping, and then measuring herself.
