Basic Trope: A close-up image of something gross, used to show the disparity between a wide, styilized shot of something to the uncomfortably detailed, nauseating features of it. It is often used in cartoons.
- Straight: In an episode of "The Adventures of Bob", a close-up of an extremely filthy sewer rat is shown.
- Exaggerated:
- The close-up features graphic blood/gore - doubly shocking if "The Adventures of Bob" is a children's show.
- This is a Running Gag in "The Adventures of Bob".
- The close-up takes up the entire screen and/or is more realistically drawn than the rest of the show.
- The close-up is onscreen for a while.
- Downplayed: A somewhat gross-looking sewer rat is focused on for a short time, but it's not heavily detailed.
- Justified:
- The rat was being filmed for whatever reason, and the "close up" was a view of the rat getting close to the camera.
- The rat just crawled by the camera as it was called up, essentially photobombing the shot.
- Inverted: A cute animal is the one getting close to the camera instead.
- Subverted: A zoom-in on the rat shows it actually has relatively clean fur.
- Double Subverted: ...But not very good dental hygiene.
- Parodied: A Show Within a Show that has a cute art style cuts to an image of a real mutilated body right in front of the child watching.
- Zig Zagged: The rat gets close to the camera, but is actually really cute. The other rat, not so much.
- Averted: No gross images are focused on.
- Enforced: "The Adventures of Bob" is a Grossout Show, so this trope is basically one of the Acceptable Breaks from Reality.
- Lampshaded:
- "Oh, gross!"
- “Y’know, you never really notice how disgusting these things are until you take a real close look at them.”
- Invoked: Bob brings the rat close to the camera.
- Exploited: Someone intentionally makes a disgusting face in order to be left alone.
- Defied: The rat is about to be zoomed in on, but someone interrupts the scene.
- Discussed: "No one wants to see that!"
- Conversed: "Why do so many cartoons often show close-ups of gross images?"
- Deconstructed: The rat is in a Show Within a Show and the close-up was deemed too shocking for kids, causing the age rating to be bumped up.
- Reconstructed: However, despite its age rating being bumped up, it could still be considered some scientific value for some kids.
