Basic Trope: A generic American town.

  • Straight: The Alice and Bob Show takes place in The United States in a relatively small town with no notable features.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • It is a small American town, but it's got a few unique features that stop it from being too generic.
    • The main characters live in a small American town but they travel a lot.
    • The characters live in a small outer suburb of a much larger city that they frequently visit.
  • Justified: America is a big place and has a lot of small towns.
  • Inverted:
    • The show involves small, generic towns in every country but America.
    • The show takes place in a very unique American town.
    • Big Applesauce
    • The show takes place in Sitka (the largest American city by area).
  • Subverted:
    • The town eventually develops more unique characteristics.
    • The town is on the US-Canada border.
    • While you may be excused for thinking they are saying that the village lies in America they are actually saying that the village is America, Limburg, Netherlands. Place names can be sneaky like that.
  • Double Subverted: Characters try to liven up the town but it goes back to being generic.
  • Parodied: The town's name is "Plainville" and is famous for being "The Most Generic Town in America".
  • Zigzagged:
  • Averted:
    • The show is not set in America.
    • The show is set in America, but not in a generic town.
  • Enforced: "All our actors are American, so we need to set this show in America so that nobody will think their accents sound weird." "Where in America?" "I dunno, just a generic town."
  • Lampshaded: "Welcome to Boringtown, USA!"
  • Invoked: The citizens decide to refrain from making their town too notable.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The citizens try to make their town stand out.
  • Discussed: "Before I moved to New York, I used to live in this nondescript town in Idaho."
  • Conversed: "So the show's set in America, in this generic town..."
  • Implied: Despite little being revealed about the town, many of the backgrounds and dialogue imply that it's nothing interesting.
  • Deconstructed: The residents get depressed about how they're all so generic.
  • Reconstructed: They differentiate themselves from one another and cheer up.
  • Played for Laughs: They're so generic, they all look the same, and they all say the same things, all the time.
  • Played for Drama: ???
