Playing With / Disco Sucks

Go To

Basic Trope: Disco music and/or it's fans are derided.

  • Played Straight: After Bob says he likes disco music early in the story, Alice occasionally mocks him for his cheesy tastes.
  • Exaggerated: Alice turns Bob into the town pariah because of his love of Disco.
  • Downplayed: Alice only says a minor "dude, Tony Manero is a shitty role model" quip when Bob reveals his love of disco and then lets it go.
  • Justified:
    • Alice considers Bob a Disco Dan and thinks he's way too stuck in The '70s.
    • Bob is a time traveller who frequently visits the year Disco genre was oversaturated.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice expresses favourable opinions of disco to show how cool she is.
    • Disco haters like Alice are mocked as tasteless and stuck in their ways, engaging in a trend that in itself is dated when everyone else has moved on.
  • Played for Laughs: Bob's love of disco being constantly revealed in embarrassing occasions is a Running Gag: he has The Bee-Gees' "Saturday Night Fever" as an Embarrassing Ringtone, his media player got stuck playing The Tramps' "Disco Inferno" and when he tries to do something about it he starts a fire (with "Disco Inferno" still playing), he accidentally taped over his orchestral conductor best friend's tape of "Fifth of Beethoven" with the Walter Murphy version, and it seems his Instagram account is nothing but gifs of perverted pictures of his girlfriend all set to Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff".
  • Played for Drama:
    • A wedge in Alice and Bob's friendship forms over disco.
    • Bob's love of disco is because it brings back fond memories of his mother. He gets bullied for his love of disco. Whether or not his bullies find out about that and feel remorse because of it depends on the writer.
  • Played for Horror: Bob is not bullied over his love of disco. He is lynched.
