Basic Trope: Cradling a dying person in your arms.

  • Straight: Bob cradles Alice as she dies from a wound.
  • Exaggerated: Every single person Bob knows dies in his arms.
  • Downplayed: Bob cradles the severely injured Alice as she slips into a coma.
  • Justified: Bob loved Alice (platonically or romantically) and wanted to hug her one last time.
  • Inverted:
    • The dying Alice cradles Bob in her arms.
    • Bob cradles Alice as she revives.
  • Subverted: It looks like Alice is dying in Bob's arms, but it turns out she's only going to sleep.
  • Double Subverted: ...Which she wasn't supposed to do because of the risk, and she dies shortly afterwards.
  • Parodied: Bob cradles Alice in his arms and acts like she's dying after she gets a splinter.
  • Zig Zagged: It looks like Alice is dying in Bob's arms, but it turns out she's only going to sleep, which she wasn't supposed to do because of the risk. She wakes up and Bob cradles her some more. She gets comatose and Bob keeps hugging her. She dies shortly afterwards.
  • Averted: Nobody dies.
  • Enforced: The author wants to get in one last sweet moment before he kills Alice off.
  • Lampshaded: "Dying in your arms... I might have expected this. One last touch for us..."
  • Invoked: Alice knows she's dying and asks Bob to cradle her for the last time.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz knows Bob will probably hold Alice as she dies, so he kills her in a new way that will result in her reanimating and attacking Bob while his guard is down.
  • Defied: Dying Alice asks Bob to be held in his arms. Bob is too heartbroken and tries to distance himself from the emotional trauma, so he refuses.
  • Discussed: "Alice died." — "I know. They say Bob kept hugging her till her last breath."
  • Conversed: "I can't stand these tragic scenes when lovers die in an embrace. It's too heartbreaking."
  • Deconstructed: Alice died of a contagious disease, and Bob ends up catching it due to his close contact with her.
  • Reconstructed: As she lay dying, Alice protested Bob holding her due to the contagion, and, when he ignores her, she tells him she wants to see him again, but not soon. Bob gets over the illness, partly due to determination to fulfill her wishes, and he's glad he had that one last moment with her and that she didn't die alone.
