Playing With / Defeating the Undefeatable

Go To

Basic Trope: The one who never loses is finally defeated.

  • Straight: In boxing, the Heavyweight Champion (and #1 pound-for-pound boxer in general) "Untouchable" Harry Young, who had gone an incredible 99-0, is finally defeated by the underdog "Bombastic" Billy Finnigan (who clawed his way from Minimumweight to Heavyweight) after Billy lands the mightiest left uppercut anyone's ever seen.
  • Exaggerated: Harry was an absolute beast that everyone believed that would retire without losing (or even being knocked down, or even being hit) once. Enter Billy, who swiftly knocks Harry's lights out in the first seconds of the first round.
  • Downplayed:
    • Billy manages to defeat Harry... By split decision.
    • Billy only lost by split decision, but everyone unanimously agrees that Billy was Harry's toughest fight yet, since Harry had been knocked down even more than the others.
    • Harry was considered to be the toughest boxer known to have never been knocked down once. Come his fight with Billy, where he finally gets knocked down for the first time (Harry still wins).
      • It was in a spar when he got knocked down by Billy.
  • Justified: Harry had been blessed with some of the greatest genetics, had the most effective training regimens, and can come up with picture perfect plans on the fly. It's just that Billy, who had such a severe height disadvantage (since Harry is 6'5" while Billy is 5'5"), has a much more forceful, explosive, and aggressive fighting style than Harry, and is a pretty damn intense Determinator himself.
  • Inverted: Billy, who had been The Chew Toy for so long, finally gets a Broken Win/Loss Streak after defeating Harry.
  • Subverted: It appears that Billy is about to defeat Harry, but Harry manages to land a lucky Cross Counter, sending Billy to the mat, seemingly down and out...
  • Double Subverted: But Billy manages to breathe in his Heroic Second Wind, and make a miracle comeback, laying Harry out.
  • Parodied:
    • Harry is a Nigh-Invulnerable World's Best Warrior who has a win streak of a billion wins, but the very moment Billy steps in the same ring as Harry, Harry gets laid out from a simple jab.
    • Billy's gimmick is that he's always going to break anyone's win streak, earning him the reputation of streak breaker. NOBODY is safe from his wrath, and it's why everyone would always alternate with wins and losses.
  • Zig-Zagged: Harry lands a Cross Counter with Billy, but as Billy comes back to his senses, the referee immediately stops the action to see if Billy is conscious. Surprisingly, he still is, and almost defeats Harry despite going through a Heroic RRoD, but Harry lays Billy out cold with a left overhand, finally taking the win over Billy.
  • Averted: Harry beats Billy with little trouble.
  • Enforced: It's a classic sports trope that shows that determination will indeed win over the most insurmountable odds.
  • Lampshaded: "BILLY JUST KNOCKED THE CHAMP'S LIGHTS OUT!"
  • Invoked: "C'mon, Billy! Remember EVERYTHING that you learned in training! You wanna be the 1 in 999-1, right? This is your chance!"
  • Exploited: Billy uses the fame acquired from defeating Harry for his own purposes.
  • Defied:
  • Discussed: "Did you hear that Billy defeated Harry? I never knew it would happen, but he actually did it!"
  • Conversed: "They always prop up these champions as undefeatable, only for them to get squashed by the protagonist."
  • Implied: We only get to see the perspective of the viewers watching the match with Billy and Harry. The moment the bell rings and the victor is announced, the viewers all jump for joy, as if a miracle happened and the underdog had won.
  • Deconstructed: Billy is filled with ego after defeating Harry, which is why he Took a Level in Jerkass.
  • Reconstructed: As if it was Laser-Guided Karma, Billy suddenly takes the role the undefeatable part, where he's defeated by some random boxer.
  • Played for Laughs: Harry only lost because he was so fed up with Billy's absolutely bizarre antics that he made the decision to have his coach throw in the towel.
  • Played for Drama: Harry undergoes a Heroic BSoD after his shocking defeat, and so turns to alcohol.
  • Played for Horror: Billy defeats Harry with a mighty left uppercut, causing Harry to hit his head on the corner. Harry, seconds after the match, doesn't wake up. Upon checking Harry, the referee steps back, horrified, staring at the now cold and dead Harry.

We did it! We have defeated the undefeated main page!
