Playing With / Boys Like Creepy Critters

Go To

Basic Trope: A young male character likes insects, arachnids, reptiles, amphibians, or any other animal popularly considered 'creepy'.

  • Straight: Jake Glover the Snake Lover adores his pet snake, Slithers. He also has several books about insects and arachnids.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Jake prefers snakes to humans, and violently attacks anyone who does not like them.
    • Jake goes to an all-boys school, and he and all his classmates love snakes and bugs.
  • Downplayed: Jake seems happy and interested when he learns about snakes at school, but apart from that he doesn't mention them.
  • Justified: Jake learned about some creepy critters one day, and has had an interest in them ever since.
  • Inverted: Creepy crawlies are attracted to boys, but despise girls.
  • Gender Inverted: Jake's friend Sally is obsessed with insects, reptiles and so on, while Jake hates them.
  • Subverted: Jake is shown caring for a giant spider, but it turns out she's Sally's pet, which he is looking after while she is on holiday.
  • Double Subverted: Jake then goes home, and fawns over Slithers.
  • Parodied: Jake loves snakes so much that he marries one, and all the guests at the wedding are frogs and beetles.
  • Zig Zagged:
    • Jake likes creepy critters, but Bob hates them, while James is indifferent to them. Meanwhile Sally also likes them, but Jane does not.
    • Jake likes snakes and lizards, but hates insects and arachnids.
    • Jake is an Animal Lover or Friend to All Living Things who doesn't discriminate based on whether an animal is "creepy" or "cute." He fawns over Slithers just as much as Snowball, for example.
  • Averted: Jake does not particularly like snakes.
  • Enforced: The creators also like snakes and want to pass this opinion on to their audience, so they include a snake-loving character to show that snakes are not bad.
  • Lampshaded: "Every boy I meet seems to have some weird obsession with creepy animals!"
  • Invoked: Jake's mum is afraid of snakes, but she didn't want to pass on this phobia to her child, so she bought him Slithers.
  • Exploited: Jake developed a bond with Slithers, and when a bully threatens him, Jake uses the snake to scare the bully.
  • Defied: Jake's parents think that reptiles are evil, so they forbid Jake to have any involvement with them whatsoever.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Why are all the insect themed programmes aimed at boys? Don't they know girls can like bugs too?"
  • Deconstructed: Jake's snake obsession leads to him getting bitten by a venomous snake, and nearly dying.
  • Reconstructed: After the incident Jake learns not to pick up wild snakes as they may be dangerous, but he still loves learning about snakes and his pet, Slithers, who was specifically bred as a pet so is safe for him to play with.

Hey, there's a giant spider back on the main page! Cool!
