Basic Trope: Being told when you are or are not allowed to use the bathroom, usually as a form of punishment.

  • Straight: Bob asks Ms. Tropeson if he can use the bathroom, and she refuses to let him.
  • Exaggerated: For some reason, Ms. Tropeson never lets anyone use the bathroom in her class, even if it's during free time or the person is clearly having a Potty Emergency.
  • Downplayed:
    • Ms. Tropeson only lets people use the bathroom in their class if it's a Potty Emergency.
    • Ms. Tropeson is in the middle of something important, so she asks Bob to wait a few minutes.
    • Ms. Tropeson makes Bob use a Disgusting Public Toilet instead of the relatively clean ones.
  • Justified:
    • Ms. Tropeson is a Sadist Teacher and wants to punish her students.
    • Ms. Tropeson thinks (whether righteously or not) that Bob doesn't actually need the bathroom and is just trying to do a Bathroom Search Excuse.
    • Bob is asking to use the bathroom when Ms. Tropeson is in the middle of a lecture or something else important. She's asking him to wait because she doesn't want him to miss what she's about to say.
  • Inverted: As a form of punishment, Bob is locked in the bathroom, even if he doesn't actually need to go.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob is blocked from using the bathroom, but it turns out it's just because it's out of order, being cleaned, or is otherwise unavailable right now.
    • Bob asks Ms. Tropeson to use the bathroom. She initially says no, but then lets him use the bathroom anyway.
  • Double Subverted: The bathroom wasn't actually unavailable; Bob was being lied to so that he'd have to find another bathroom.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Ms. Tropeson does not withhold bathroom privileges from her students. The worst she may do is ask them to let her know before going to the bathroom so that she'll know where they are in case of an emergency or anything similar.
    • Bob does not have to use the bathroom.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Alice and Bob are in a sub-dom romantic relationship, and Bob has to ask Alice for permission whenever he wants to use the bathroom.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Bob decides to solve the problem with an Excrement Statement.
    • Ms. Tropeson is not allowed to say that her students cannot use the bathroom when they need it.
  • Discussed: "I'll never understand why teachers have so much control about when you can and can't use the bathroom."
  • Conversed: ???
