Basic Trope: Black barf signifies some really bad condition.
- Straight: As Bob gets close to turning into a Plague Zombie, he vomits something black
- Exaggerated: Anyone infected with the zombie plague will continuously vomit black barf.
- Downplayed: As Bob gets close to turning, he vomits, and the barf is streaked with black.
- Justified: The black barf was specifically designed to cause zombie plagues as a bioweapon.
- Inverted: As Bob gets close to becoming a superbeing, he vomits something black.
- Subverted: In the middle of a horrific situation, Bob vomits something black...and sheepishly confesses he'd binged on licorice before this started happening.
- Double Subverted: But then he gets infected with an unnatural plague and vomits something black again.
- Parodied: Alice claims Bob is gonna be ok since the barf is not black, but rather a really deep shade of blue that just happens to look black from a distance.
- Zig Zagged: Sometimes zombies vomit black barf when they become the zombies, but sometimes it means you're recovering from the plague (getting the virus out of your body).
- Averted: The "black barf" is just a very weird fashion style.
- Enforced: The person who made the zombie virus wanted to up the squick factor of normal zombies.
- Lampshaded:Alice: Okay, you're throwing up, and it's... black. ...That's not good.
- Invoked: A zombie virus already existed, but an evil bioengineer created and sold the extra-virulent "black barf" variant strain, for money.
- Exploited: The survivors know exactly who is infected, because of their stained lips and teeth, and use that to avoid getting near infected but still-living people.
- Defied: A bunch of people got a virus which made them throw up a black vomit, at the same time as a zombie virus started spreading... but people who had the black vomit virus became immune to the zombie virus.
- Discussed: Alice tells Bob that he can tell who had been infected, even if they haven't turned yet, because they'll have black stains around their mouth.
- Conversed: Alice and Bob wonder why the zombie virus makes people's vomit turn black. They discuss a few theories.
