Basic Trope: A character is instituted as leader of a particular territory for previous actions.

  • Straight: Alice is appointed queen of Tropopolis for successfully defeating Overlord Ichor
  • Exaggerated: Alice is appointed as a divine proxy to all planes of existence for her contributions to cleansing them of evil.
  • Downplayed: Alice becomes the honorary leader of an order of knights she saved earlier on.
  • Justified: Overlord Ichor killed the previous ruler, so Tropopolis needs someone new. Since Alice has proven herself, she gets the job.
  • Inverted:
    • The story begins with a leader being dethroned and follows him in a new role; he doesn't regain his kingdom.
    • The story is about the selfish and greedy Queen Alice finding out that she's not the rightful ruler, coming to terms with her illegitimacy and growing humble enough to realize that Tropopolis would be better off ruled by the rightful queen Betty. In the end, Alice voluntarily gives up the throne so that Betty can rule.
    • The story ends with Overlord Ichor destroying Tropopolis, and then taking over what little remains of it.
    • "Suck Moment of Dethroning"
  • Subverted: Alice is instead encouraged to run for office in a special election to replace the leader.
  • Double Subverted: But when she wins, the dignitaries and citizens go all-out to make her inauguration ceremony great.
  • Parodied: Alice is appointed queen of her family apartment, and even gets her own Burger King paper crowning ceremony.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Even though Alice saves Tropopolis, its current rulers keep their positions.
  • Enforced: The exec say that since audiences love princesses, Alice has to become the princess of Tropopolis in the end, so they can make sequels about Princess Alice and sell plenty of Princess Alice toys.
  • Lampshaded: "You're probably going to be queen or something after this."
  • Invoked: "My reward, you say? I suppose I'll take the crown."
  • Exploited: Alice wants to be queen, so she manufactures a threat from which she "saves" Tropopolis.
  • Defied:
    • "No, thank you. I'm not done adventuring yet."
    • The Constitution of Tropopolis explicitly forbids leaders from choosing successors with little or no political experience - regardless of any heroic acts they've done.
  • Discussed: "After all the crap I've gone through for their sake, they'd better make me queen."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: A work ends with Alice saving Tropopolis. In the sequel, it's shown that Alice is now queen of Tropopolis.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Alice may have defeated Overlord Ichor, but that doesn't necessarily make her a good ruler. As it becomes increasingly obvious that she has no idea how to rule Tropopolis well, her people suffer and her popularity plummets.
    • Tropopolis is ruled by whoever saved it last. As it's frequently under attack from various threats, its rulers get replaced often, which leads to political instability.
  • Reconstructed: Alice gets highly skilled advisors to help her rule well.
