Basic Trope: A character experiences another character's death.

  • Straight: Alice uses a memory-searching artifact to experience Bob's last moments.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice uses a memory-searching artifact to experience the last moments of everyone in her Doomed Hometown.
    • Alice relives Bob's entire life this way.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice uses a memory-searching artifact to experience the moments that led up to Bob being severely injured and rendered comatose.
    • Alice cannot use the memory-searching artifact to experience the moments first-hand - just which emotions Bob felt at the time.
  • Justified:
    • Alice needs answers, and the only person who knows what happened is the victim.
    • Alice is Bob's Reincarnation.
  • Inverted: Alice uses a memory-searching device to experience Bob's birth.
  • Subverted: Alice attempts to use the memory-searching device, but it malfunctions when used on Bob.
  • Double Subverted: ... Because the batteries are empty. Once Alice charges the device it works again.
  • Parodied: Alice experiences Bob's last moments, before he slipped on that Banana Peel...
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice never gets a memory-searching device to use on Bob.
  • Enforced: "We need a flashback scene out of Bob's POV to explain what happened, but need to explain why we're shifting over to him after death; since it's a sci-fi, let's introduce a thingamajig that can read his last thoughts!"
  • Lampshaded:
Alice: If I can experience Bob's memories of what killed him, it'll put us one step closer to a solution.
  • Implied: Bob's murderer asks how the hell they figured out he did it, and Alice shows him a futuristic device while saying "Bob showed us himself".
  • Invoked: The inventor, Charlie, created the memory-searching device with the goal of using it on murder victims to speed investigations along.
  • Exploited: A particularly sadistic murderer puts his victim through severe pain to put Alice through the same.
  • Defied: Alice has a memory-searching device at hand, but never uses it on the deceased as she feels it is akin to desecrating their corpse.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Using such a device on people takes a serious toll on Alice's mental health and worsens her own fear of death.
  • Reconstructed: Everyone who uses a memory-scanning device is given a background check to see if they can it, as well as free psychiatrist meetings if needed. Eventually, Alice can minimize the toll on her psyche from using the device.
