Basic Trope: Seafaring pirates in modern times.

  • Straight: Charles is often shown dressing and acting like a pirate despite living in modern times.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Charles is always in full pirate attire, rides everywhere he can on a ship, and calls himself "Captain Charles Brownbeard" all the time despite living in modern times.
    • Everyone is a pirate, even though the work takes place in modern times.
  • Downplayed: Charles just likes pirate-like fashion.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • Even though the work takes place in a time where pirates would be expected to appear, there are no pirates at all.
    • Charles is a Ruthless Modern Pirate in the Golden Age of Piracy, dressing and acting the part.
    • Charles is a Pirate 400 Years Too Early, terrorizing Europe in The High Middle Ages, while still dressing like he's from The Golden Age of Piracy.
  • Subverted: Charles is seen dressing like a pirate, but it's because he's practicing for a play in which he is a pirate.
  • Double Subverted: Even outside of the play, Charles is shown to enjoy pirate fashion a lot.
  • Parodied: Charles steals packages, aka porch piracy, wearing a hook hand, eye patch, and pegleg.
  • Zig-Zagged: Charles dresses and acts like a Golden Age pirate in the modern day, because he's a Ruthless Modern Pirate, though as most contemporary pirates don't actually act like that, he still looks very out of place among his peers. He doesn't do it to romanticize the period, though; his victims don't take him seriously because of his attire, only to find out too late that he acts the way real pirate captains acted instead of like The Theme Park Version. Because they let their guard down at his apparent outlandishness, he earns a reputation of being every bit as dangerous as those he's imitating.
  • Averted: Charles is a Ruthless Modern Pirate.
  • Enforced: "Pirates are cool, right? Let's add some!"
  • Lampshaded: Bob disguises as a pirate and starts behaving mockingly like them at a halloween party.
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Why does Charles think he's a pirate? Are there even any pirates around these days?"
