Added DiffLines:

*GunpowderFantasy: Early chapters gave the sense that it was a WoodenShipsAndIronMen setting, with several characters possessing either {{Charles Atlas Superpower}}s or else having superhuman abilities from consuming Devil Fruit, and most pirates possessing flintlock firearms, with swords still being a preferred method of combat. However, the series progressed to full SchizoTech as it went on, introducing cyborgs, trains that run over water, and transponder snails, living telepathic telecommunication devices used throughout the Blue Seas and Grand Line.

Usopp often lies to his enemies about having an exaggerated number of men at his command and no one ever buys it.

* HateSink: More than a few villains are absent of any redeeming traits and are as despicable as possible so that their inevitable comeuppance will be extremely satisfying.
** [[BitchInSheepsClothing Captain Kuro]], alias Klahadore, is one of the more heinous early series villains, who plans to betray and murder a girl who took him in and showed him kindness for years, as well as anyone who might know his identity, so he can retire from piracy. He is also [[BadBoss willing to casually murder his underlings]], whether as an accidental consequence of his uncontrollable FlashStep, [[YouHaveFailedMe for taking too long to kill his enemies]] or [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness because they aren't useful any longer,]] and willingly has one of his men turned over to the Marines and executed in order to fake his own death. His cruelty and callousness are played terrifyingly straight, making him one of the most despicable minor antagonists.
** [[SmallNameBigEgo Don Krieg]]. While not one of the most monstrous villains to appear, he is a really detestable blowhard without redeemable character traits and is completely blind to how weak he really is even after Mihawk wipes out his entire fleet singlehandedly. He also [[TheFarmerAndTheViper attacks the people who saved his life]] the moment he has his strength back just for the hell of it and plans to rob them blind, is a BadBoss that treats his own crew as disposable, relies on dirty tricks when he realizes he can't win in a straight fight, and is a huge SoreLoser who refuses to understand when he's been beaten.
** [[DirtyCop Captain Nezumi]] from the Arlong Park Arc. A corrupt Marine Captain of Navy Base 16 in the East Blue who happily takes bribes from Arlong and overlooks his tyranny so long as he gets a cut of the tributes. He shows up with his marines to steal Nami's treasure, which she had spent years trying to collect in order to free her village, and shoots Nami's adoptive sister Nojiko in the shoulder for interfering. After Arlong is defeated, he tries to take the reward and all the wealth for himself. Luffy and his crew [[CurbStompBattle objected]] to his attempts to rain on their parade, and provides Nami with quite a bit of [[CatharsisFactor catharsis]] after Arlong is defeated.
** [[SmugSnake Yama]] from the Skypiea Arc. There's nothing nice to say about him, he destroys the Skypiean ruins before Robin and mocks her when she calls him out for it. Which makes her beatdown of him all the more cathartic.
** [[DirtyCoward Spandam]] from the Enies Lobby Arc. The members of [=CP9=] are too quirky to fully hate, but Spandam's main quirk is how despicable, incompetent, and weak he is in spite of his [[SmallNameBigEgo inflated view of himself]]. He eventually gets the snot slapped out of him god-knows-how-many times by his former prisoner, Robin. [[WouldHitAGirl And given his treatment of her]] and general personality, he deserves every single one of them. [[spoiler: And the viewer likely won't be feeling much in the way of sympathy when she later snaps his spine]]. Similarly, he ruined Franky's life in more ways than one, so it's cathartic to see Franky beating him up as well. Overall, his scenes are either him suffering in a comedic and satisfying way or being so nasty he shows why he deserves it.
** [[InvisibleJerkass Absalom]] from the Thriller Bark Arc. While not one of the most heinous villains, he is such a perverted scumbag who uses his {{Invisibility}} powers to [[PowerPerversionPotential fulfil his dirty needs]]. His [[EstablishingCharacterMoment first appearance]] has him sexually assaulting Robin by [[LecherousLicking licking]] her while invisible. Later in his next scene, he tries to sexually assault Nami in the shower, and later on afterwards, he [[DudeShesLikeInAComa drugs her out and tries forcing her to marry him]]. And to top it off, he's also a {{Hypocrite}} who constantly rejects Lola's advances, thinking her to be an AbhorrentAdmirer, never mind how he himself is one to Nami. [[spoiler:It's safe to say that nobody was sad to learn that he was killed by the Blackbeard Pirates.]]
** [[KnightTemplar Admiral Akainu]] (also known as Sakazuki), is such a loathsome character with an inflated view of his own righteousness that he makes even other Marines disgusted. His introductory scene during Robin's flashback up to the destruction of Ohara has him destroy the ship full of refugees ''in case'' one of the scholars snuck on board, much to Kuzan (later known as Admiral Aokiji)'s disgust. His actions at Marineford, especially, cement him as a hated character, both in-universe and to the reader. [[spoiler:Killing Ace, Luffy's big brother, just for being Roger's son and trying to do so with Luffy just for being Dragon's son, was just the start of his atrocities. After he took over as Fleet Admiral to fill the EvilPowerVacuum, several Marines quit in disgust rather than have anything to do with Akainu anymore, including Admiral Aokiji (after being maimed by him as Kuzan tried to oppose Akainu's promotion).]]
** Every scene the [[AristocratsAreEvil World Nobles]] appear in just makes viewers hate them even more. Besides [[spoiler:Doflamingo's family]], they are just pure scum. They just keep doing horrible things, confident that their status lets them do whatever they want. They buy and kidnap people to make them slaves, shoot people just for not kneeling before them, make slaves eat Devil Fruits just for their own sick entertainment and much worse. Many characters suffered under them, including Fisher Tiger, Hancock and her sisters and Koala, not to mention one of them killed Luffy's brother Sabo just for passing in front of their ship. [[spoiler:Well, ''almost'' killed him. It's not revealed to Luffy until years later that Sabo managed to survive the attack and joined a resistance group.]] Eustass Kid, himself a PsychopathicManchild, claims that even the worst pirates are absolutely nothing compared to the World Nobles. Because of their horrible, horrible actions, it's a moment of celebration when Luffy punched Charlos in the face.
** Sabo's adopted brother [[RoyalBrat Stelly]] is pretty much designed to be as hateable as humanly possible, being a spoiled, cowardly egomaniac who is shown in basically every scene doing something that'll make the audience despise him.
** In the flashback during the Post-War Arc, the pirate [[TheHedonist Bluejam]] is shown to be a greedy, cold-blooded scumbag willing to murder children and cause mass genocide all so he can become a noble. And unlike other antagonists, neither he nor his henchmen possess any comedic or outstanding quirks to balance out their sinister natures.
** [[FantasticRacism Hody Jones]] is a racist and extremist Fish-man, similar to Arlong, but lacks Arlong's redeeming qualities such as caring for his own crewmates or [[spoiler:experiencing the humans' treatment of Fish-men to at least justify his racism. Hody himself saying that humans never really did anything to him just made his tirade seem stupid and shallow, when many Fish-men were victims of racism and slavery]]. Hody is also someone who thinks he is the best, yet [[SmallNameBigEgo he is actually a fraud]] that has to fight dirty.
** Despite his laughable moments, [[WouldHurtAChild Caesar Clown]] is perhaps the most morally bankrupt character in the series, a mad scientist that kidnapped a bunch of children from their families and deceived them into becoming his test subjects under the pretense they were sick, kept them doped up on drugs disguised as candy, and significantly shortened their lifespan trying to perfect his giantification experiment.
** The majority of the Donquixiote Pirates come off as weird, quirky, and overall too funny to hate. [[VillainWithGoodPublicity Diamante]], however, is second only to Doflamingo for the the most despicable member of the crew. Being a titled "hero", Diamante is a sociopath that loves to play dirty, gloats about killing the loved ones of the families in front of him, and has no likability throughout the manga and anime. It was a good thing his bragging led to his downfall.
** While there are many examples of good fathers in this series, [[AbusiveParents Vinsmoke Judge]], ruler of the Germa 66, isn't one of them. From his childhood to adult years, he has mistreated his son, Sanji, for showing compassion for the lower class and animals, lacking any super soldier genetics, and being a cook. The only reason why he tracked him down after [[IHaveNoSon disowning him years ago]] was so that he didn't have to give one of [[ParentalFavoritism his favorites]] in marriage to one of [[FatBastard Big Mom's]] children. [[spoiler: Even his favorites are not above his abuse, since he genetically altered his three other sons to lack any perceived weak emotions (which only Sanji was spared from due to his mother's intervention) and forced his daughter to be unable to disobey him.]] It is why many readers were laughing at his misfortune (along with the rest of the wedding guests) when [[spoiler: Judge was [[VillainsWantMercy pathetically crying for help]] as he and the rest of the Vinsmokes were trapped and cornered by gunpoint by the Charlottes. Sanji saved Judge, but only because it was something Zeff would have wanted him to do]].
** [[BigBrotherBully Niji]] gets hit with this InUniverse and out, for both his bratty and cruel behavior during the Vinsmoke's family reunion dinner, and for insulting and attacking Cosette, an innocent cook. Sanji, who hates all of his family members (except [[TokenGoodTeammate Reiju]] and his [[MissingMom deceased mother]]), [[InsultToRocks deems his brother as lower than scum]] after finding a bloodied and unconscious Cosette. When they encounter each other again in Germa's cloning labs, Sanji immediately goes straight to kicking Niji in the face, and the audience rejoiced. In a meta-sense, when Shonen Jump's 6th popularity poll for ''One Piece'' was published, Niji ranked a whopping ''94'' out of 102 total entries (tied in this spot with Leo and [[DeathByOriginStory Kuina]]), falling below the likes of [[HeroKiller Akainu]] and ''[[DirtyCoward Spandam]]''. [[spoiler:Then it's subverted when Chapter 852 reveals the [[{{Tykebomb}} true reason]] behind his behavior; while his actions are certainly despicable, they are painted in a tragic light]].
** [[BrattyTeenageDaughter Charlotte Flampe]] got a lot of hatred from viewers during the Whole Cake Island Arc. She is seen as nothing but a bratty, annoying and sadistic girl who interferes with Luffy and Katakuri's fight, and shoots Luffy with a blowgun in order to try and earn her older brother's praise. However, when Katakuri becomes furious at her for interfering with his fight and inflicts a wound on himself and shows his mouth to make the fight fair on Luffy, Flampe immediately turns on her brother, laughing and spitting on him because of his mouth (Something that genuinely upsets Katakuri, who cares very deeply for his family) and even has her subordinates take photos of his mouth and [[KickTheDog threatens to show them to everyone]]. It's no surprise that many fans cheered when she was knocked out by the combined force of Luffy and Katakuri's Conquerer's Haki clashing with each other.
** [[RapePillageAndBurn Peachbeard]] hides under Blackbeard's name to commit atrocious crimes and shows no positive qualities, making his defeat at the hands of the townspeople and the revolutionaries all of the more satisfying.
** [[TheUsurper Kurozomi Orochi]] is the corrupt shogun of Wano and ally of [[OurDragonsAreDifferent Kaido]]. As ruler of the land, he allows the Animal Kingdom Pirates to ravage the land, while keeping the capital free of pollution caused by their factories. He lives a [[TheHedonist hedonistic]] lifestyle as everyone outside the capital are starving due to the famine caused by his allies' actions. [[spoiler:He turned one of the leftover towns, Ebisu Town, into a community of StephordSmilers by feeding them SMILES, due to wanting an illusion of a happy domain. After the reveal about his clan being persecuted for the [[SinsOfTheFather sins of his grandfather]], his treatment is shown in a worse light because it means his willingness to turn the country into a hellhole is all part of his revenge, and makes him a hypocrite as well. It is why many readers cheered when he gets [[SurprisinglySuddenDeath his head suddenly lopped off]] by Kaido, when he objects to him trying to turn all of Wano (including the capitol) into his playground]]. [[spoiler:Before long, it is revealed that he's still alive after getting decapitated thanks to his Devil Fruit powers and retaliates by setting fire in Onigashima to take everyone out even if his subordinates are still there]].
** [[FauxAffablyEvil Admiral Ryokugyu]], aka Aramaki, is an AxCrazy PsychoSupporter of the [[AristocratsAreEvil Celestial Dragons]] who indulges in ruthless {{Dehumanization}} towards anyone who the [[PeoplesRepublicOfTyranny World Government]] considers worthless, and in some ways he is ''worse'' than [[KnightTemplar Akainu]].
** The filler Rainbow Mist Arc has [[MayorPain Wetton]]. He was a pirate who took over Ruluka Village and forcefully became its mayor. Over the next 50 years, [[EvilIsPetty he's forced citizens to pay ridiculous taxes]] and forced those who couldn't pay to work to death on the Rainbow Tower (which would later be used as a bridge to the alternate dimension Rainbow Mist). During his battle with the Straw Hats in the Rainbow Mist, upon being overpowered, he becomes a DirtyCoward and makes a run for it, detonating the bridge between the dimensions and leaving his men, including his son and grandson, behind.
** The fourth movie gives us [[BloodKnight General Gasparde]], who is perhaps the most morally bankrupt BigBad in all of the ''One Piece'' films. A flashback reveals that he's betrayed the Marines so that he can go around pillaging towns. He also went as far as [[WouldHurtAChild attempting to drown a 3-year-old child]] and [[SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil enslaving the survivors of the town he's attacked]]. In the present, he tries to cheat in the Dead End race by giving all the other racers fake Eternal Poses that lead to certain doom, as well as [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness sinking the person who helped him rig the race]]. And he did all this just ForTheEvulz. He's also a BadBoss to his crew who throws out those he deems worthless. During the film's climax, Gasparde tears open Luffy's prized hat just to spite him, earning his ire. And while the majority of the other movie villains have at least some redeemable or quirky character traits, [[CompleteMonster Gasparde has none of them]].

** [[DirtyCop Captain Nezumi]] from the Arlong Arc.
There's nothing nice to say about him, he destroys the Skypeain ruins before Robin and mocks her when she calls him out for it.
Overall, his scenes are either him suffering in a comedic and satisfying way or being so nasty he shows why he deserves it.

Kind of weird to not list Hate Sink characters here while the page itself does.

* HateSink: More than a few villains are absent of any redeeming traits and are as despicable as possible so that their inevitable comeuppance will be extremely satisfying, with the most notable examples being the [[AristocratsAreEvil Celestial Dragons]]. Other examples are [[DirtyCoward Spandam]] and [[HeWhoFightsMonsters Orochi]].

to:

* HateSink: More than a few villains are absent of any redeeming traits and are as despicable as possible so that their inevitable comeuppance will be extremely satisfying, satisfying.
** [[DirtyCop Captain Nezumi]] from the Arlong Arc. A corrupt Marine Captain of Navy Base 16 in the East Blue who happily takes bribes from Arlong and overlooks his tyranny so long as he gets a cut of the tributes.
[[spoiler: Even his favorites are not above his abuse, since he genetically altered his three other sons to lack any perceived weak emotions (which only Sanji was spared from due to his mother's intervention) and forced his daughter to be unable to disobey him.]] It is why many readers were laughing at his misfortune (along
with the most notable examples rest of the wedding guests) when [[spoiler: Judge was [[VillainsWantMercy pathetically crying for help]] as he and the rest of the Vinsmokes were trapped and cornered by gunpoint by the Charlottes.
After the reveal about his clan
being persecuted for the [[SinsOfTheFather sins of his grandfather]], his treatment is shown in a worse light because it means his willingness to turn the country into a hellhole is all part of his revenge, and makes him a hypocrite as well.
** [[FauxAffablyEvil Admiral Ryokugyu]], aka Aramaki, is an AxCrazy PsychoSupporter of
the [[AristocratsAreEvil Celestial Dragons]]. Other examples are [[DirtyCoward Spandam]] Dragons]] who indulges in ruthless {{Dehumanization}} towards anyone who the [[PeoplesRepublicOfTyranny World Government]] considers worthless, and [[HeWhoFightsMonsters Orochi]].in some ways he is ''worse'' than [[KnightTemplar Akainu]].
During the film's climax, Gasparde tears open Luffy's prized hat just to spite him, earning his ire. ** However, Imu is the true leader of the World Government and The Five Elder Stars Elders bow before him.

** Played frighteningly straight, when during the phone-call between Professor Clover and the Five Elder Stars, he reveals the knowledge from the research the World Government tried to suppress on the Void Century, and is ordered to be shot before he finishes, and the island of Ohara where he and his fellow researchers reside to be a target for the [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill Buster Call, and wiped out]].

** Buggy is a victim in Episode 8, Kalifa gives one to Sanji while his leg is raised to head level (chivalrously stopped short of her face of course), and when Franky's turn comes in the anime (courtesy of Nico Robin's devil fruit power, which she used to try to shanghai him into the Strawhat Pirates; He joined out of his free will, though, and was more unfluenced by Iceburg reminding him of his childhood dreams and asking him to forgive himself than Nico Robin's torture) they do a ''[[RepeatCut quintuple take]]'' of it.

* HeroesActVillainsHinder '''and''' VillainsActHeroesReact: Individual arcs in ''One Piece'' vary between both tropes quite a bit. Some arcs have the Straw Hats stumbling upon a scheme being enacted by the villains, which they then throw a wrench in. Other arcs have the Straw Hats actively disrupting the status quo while the villains try desperately to stop them and maintain their own positions of power. Generally speaking, earlier arcs lean more toward VillainsActHeroesReact, with the crew befriending locals on the various islands they come across and try to protect them from some invading pirate crew. Later arcs lean more toward HeroesActVillainsHinder as the Straw Hats' actions create a major domino effect in the setting, causing those in power to desperately try to keep these young upstarts in check.
