Nightmare Fuel / The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

• While it's sometimes played for laughs, post-apocalyptic Bikini Bottom falls under this category. Buildings are on fire, everything is nearly destroyed, and nearly every citizen in the town has descended into savagery and madness to the point where they're willing to sacrifice one of the town's most beloved individuals.
  • More worryingly is when Spongebob and Plankton accidentally travel forward in time to next Thursday the first time they use the time machine after Bikini Bottom degenerates into anarchic chaos. They find Bikini Bottom as a desolate dustbowl, abandoned with a bearded Patrick as the only other person in sight. Patrick informs Spongebob and Plankton that everyone gave up hope that the Krabby Patty formula would ever come back and gradually disappeared. In mere days, Bikini Bottom as we know it was completely destroyed with everyone in it (save Patrick) having fled (and that's likely the most charitable interpretation as to what their ultimate fate is in this timeline) thanks to the disappearance of the Krabby Patty secret formula. It's a bit scary to think about how this would have been the future of Bikini Bottom had the Krabby Patty secret formula never been found.
• The creepy popsicle twins Plankton encounters when he enters SpongeBob's mind. It's a reference to the movie The Shining.
