Everyone comes to afterparties to have a fun time, but some moments throughout the series prove to be the striking opposite of fun.

Season One

  • Xavier's death, falling from his bedroom balcony to the rocky beach below, provides a jarring Mood Whiplash for the opening of the first episode, with Dave Franco delivering a truly primal scream that may rattle viewers who chimed in under the impression the series was strictly comedic.
  • Chelsea’s testimony. Between the mysterious figure stalking her (though that turns out to be Walt trying to return her car keys), the moodier, darker lighting, and the texts from an anonymous number threatening her to leave culminating in a picture of her at the party, her mind movie is easily the darkest of the bunch.
  • The scene where Germain confronts Danner at her desk in her old police precinct. Not only is it a heaping dose of Does This Remind You of Anything?, but it actually gets quite rattling to see the jovial future detective turn solemn after Germain growls at her in an icy and furious tone.
Germain: Do you know why we call you “Mad Dog”? It’s because you need to be put down.
    • On a lesser note, Aniq, overhearing the flashback, panics when Danner mentions that Germain is the ringer being brought in to solve the case… and given his history, he’ll most likely arrest Aniq as the obvious suspect, regardless of whether he’s innocent or not.
    • Vaughn lashing out when he begins to suspect Danner is onto him. His quiet, affable persona drops immediately for the violent, angry killer he truly is.
  • The flashback scene where Yasper murders Xavier. Yasper. The same quirky best friend to Aniq that encouraged him to pursue his romantic feelings for Zoe and who tried cheering up the depressed Chelsea. The actual murder dashes any attempts at humor, barely featuring music apart from some sharp violin music and also adds the old Skape-Diem music video to the background, making everything eerier. Then, Yasper violently strikes Xavier in the face and shoves him off the balcony, looking down at him as his old bandmate screams all the way down to his death.
    • Ben Schwartz is utterly terrifying in his performance during this scene. Gone is any hint of his previous personality. Instead, there's only a vengeful, bitter psychopath.
  • The scenes displaying the murders throughout the series shown in Episode Eight, specifically the reveal of the murder from the previous episode. Any attempt at humor is dashed away (as explained above in Xavier's death scene), and the moment where Vaughn grabs his wife and smashes her head against a metal handrail is punctuated with a rather loud crunch.
