Nightmare Fuel / Shi ni Aruki

Go To

Shi ni Aruki is not for the faint of heart, so it has its share of disturbing moments.

  • At the start of the series, Tokiko gets home and finds that her adoptive father has fallen and hit his head... then nonchalantly picks up one of the books and starts reading it.
  • Also from the first chapter, Rina and her father Hiroaki end up falling into an elevator shaft. The good news is that the fall isn't that far and they aren't hurt. The bad news is that the elevator is coming down, and while they manage to get Rina out, Hiroaki's head is slowly crushed under the elevator.
  • At the end of Chapter 7, Miyuki calls Rina, but gets her answering machine. She then calls her cell phone, and the end of the chapter reveals that the phone is in a canal. Miyuki fears the worst, and for good reason- Rina's body is later discovered.
  • In Chapter 18, Aoya tells Tokiko about his true identity as a Serial Killer before pushing her into a pool of water to drown.
  • In Chapter 19, it's revealed that Ai knows all about Aoya's murders and is completely fine with them, thinking that the fact that he has "bad parents" excuses him. Despite being the youngest character, Ai is probably the most disturbed.
  • In Chapter 24, we learn what kind of people Aoya's parents were like. Not only were they verbally and physically abusive to their children, but they ended up strangling their daughter to death and committing suicide. No wonder Aoya turned out the way he did.
  • Also from Chapter 24, Tokiko tricks Aoya and takes Ai hostage, threatening to kill her by stabbing her with a pencil if he doesn't do as she says. In the next chapter, Tokiko proceeds to drop an iron on Ai's head, although Aoya shields her from it.
  • Natsuki nearly getting strangled when her dougi bag gets caught in the elevator, which rises and causes the strap to catch around her neck and tighten.
  • In the following chapter, Natsuki manages to survive, but as she's walking on the sidewalk with Tokiko, she steps on a ball that fell out of Tokiko's bag, falls onto her side, and dies when a car runs over her head, turning it into a bloody pulp.
  • Tokiko commits suicide by stepping in front of a train. Her severed arm is thrown some distance away, and is implied to be the largest piece of her remaining. Even worse, the commuters' responses range from mild disgust to annoyance at being inconvenienced.
