Tropes

  • Album Title Drop: No Joy has one on the song "Pendulum:"
I know what they say when I walk in the light
There's no joy in my life, there's no joy when I'm right
  • Break Up Song: So, so many, particularly on Giant Sings The Blues, which is largely written about and inspired by lead singer Dylan Slocum's divorce.
  • Broken Bird: The subject of "Middle of Nine."
You've been crying your whole damn life, and they dare ask why you're not smiling
It's a buck in the machine, and you let the slots spin and beg let me down easy
  • Call-Back: The opening track on Giant Sings The Blues, "Bad Day," ends with the lyric "It's a bright day." Guess what the final track on the album is called?
    • The final track on Schmaltz, "Aloha to No One," has a section which mirrors the bridge of a previous song on the album, "The Boy Considers His Haircut."
    • The title track of Brave Faces Everyone features lines from every other song on the album being played as a wall of sound.
  • Cover Version: The band is known for their covers, which they often call "Doom and Gloom Sessions."
    • Blink-182's "I Miss You"
    • Death Cab For Cutie's "Blacking Out The Friction"
    • Alkaline Trio's "We've Had Enough"
    • The Killers' "Smile Like You Mean It"
    • Jimmy Eat World's "Futures"
    • Rilo Kiley's "Portions For Foxes"
    • Grandaddy's "Now It's On"
  • Downer Ending: The final track of Schmaltz, "Aloha to No One," ends with the narrarator accepting that while small improvements may be made in his life, overall he'll always be dealing with the burdens of loss and mental illness.
  • Emo Music: Although they prefer to call themselves "Grouch-Rock."
  • Lyrical Cold Open: "Otis/Carl"
  • Non-Appearing Title:
    • From Giant Sings the Blues: "Bad Day," "Nervous People," "Vermont," "On My Side"
    • From Schmaltz: All of the tracks aside from "Buffalo Buffalo" (kind of, the name is never said twice in a row), "Beer & Nyquil," and "It's Not Interesting"
    • From Brave Faces Everyone: "Self-Destruction(as a Reasonable Career Choice)," "Generation Loss," "Optimism (as a Radical Life Choice)," and "Dolores."
  • Remix Album: Brave Faces Etc., which consists of the songs from Brave Faces Everyone remixed in more of an electronic-rock fashion
  • Title Track: Brave Faces Everyone, although the song, "Brave Faces, Everyone" has an extra comma which changes the meaning a bit.
