Aiming for the top of the laugh

The Teppen Grand Prix, the summit of the manzai comedy world, has recently opened a trio division in its competition and has contenders from all across Japan, including Young Wai-Wai, Celebri-Tea, Akudare Kingdom, Invaders, and Bullet Kunochi. These young women have the possibilities to reach the top of the manzai pyramid - if they can get their acts together.

Teppen—!!! is a comedy manga inspired by the Seiyuu San-Shimai Team Y manzai unit created by three voice actresses, which began serialization in Monthly Bushiroad in 2021. It received an anime adaptation (entitled Teppen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Laughing 'til You Cry) in the Summer 2022 season.

Not to be confused with Capcom's Collectible Card Game of the same name, nor with one of Namco's iconic Fighting Games, Tekken.

Teppen—!!! contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Birthday Buddies: Mako and Kana share a birthday on August 10th, and the entirety of the anime's tenth episode is dedicated to it. Naturally, given the nature of this series, it's Played for Laughs.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Given that the entirety of the series is about manzai, it's filled with this. Generally, within each of the five groups, each of them settle into these roles, though some are fairly flexible.
    • In Young Wai-Wai, Yayoi tends to take the Boke role with Yomogi as the Tsukkomi. Yuzu doesn't seem to fit into either of them.
    • In Dangan Kunoichi, Kana is the boke to Chitose's tsukkomi, and Iroha can go either way.
    • In Akudare Kingdom, Miyu is the boke to Hina and Misao's tsukkomi.
    • In Celebri-Tea, Mako is the boke to Saeka and Hikari's tsukkomi.
    • Shinryakusha Team tends to be very flexible with all three playing boke and tsukkomi to each other depending on the situation.
  • Cast Herd: The massive cast is managed by having them separated into five three-woman groups.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Quite a few characters have this. Chitose sports long black pigtails, full tsundere style. Hikari has long blond pigtails kept in rings. Yuina also has a pair alongside her space buns, and even Yayoi sports a pair of short low pigtails.
  • The Idiot from Osaka: Yayoi fits this trope to a tee, being a comedian from Osaka who isn't too bright, is loud and boisterous, acts before thinking, and has a fondness for snacks and candy.
  • Idiot Hair: Yayoi has a prominent one.
  • Ojou: Celebri-Tea has this as their overall aesthetic.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: Mako from Celebri-Tea appears to be this, considering she is less comfortable being surrounded by excess wealth as the other members are.
  • Shout-Out: Miyu descends to a character via a rope in a manner similar to Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996).
  • Tokyo Is the Center of the Universe: Referenced as Yomogi notes how Tokusatsu villains always launch their attacks in Tokyo.
