The Mass Effect example does not count because it shows that the colonists of the sleeper ship did indeed arrive first to colonize the unnamed world, with the main FTL traveling society never reaching the planet at all having completely forgotten about it and the colonists that were sent there. Making this more an example of Lost Colony.

* ''Franchise/MassEffect'': The Cerberus news feed in the second game mentions a version of this trope happening when the [[GreenSkinnedSpaceBabe Asari]] stumbled across an uncharted human colony. This ended up causing a minor diplomatic incident as the human colonists reacted with hostility to the asari explorers and took them hostage. The Asari government quickly informed the Human Systems Alliance of the situation, but the Alliance had no record of this colony or the humans living there. After some investigation, the Alliance discovered that the colonists were a part of the [[LostColony Manswell Expedition]], an old SleeperShip that left Earth to colonize a new world 75 years before humanity discovered mass effect technology. Realizing that this incident was most likely a result of the colonists having been uncontacted for so long and thus not aware that alien life exists, the Alliance immediately sent a diplomatic envoy in the form of a FirstContact team to explain the situation to the colonists and arrange for the release of the hostages. According to that same news report, after everything had been settled, the Alliance offered the colonists the option of integrating into modern society, with the colony reportedly being split on the decision. While some of the colonists eagerly agreed, wanting to know what has changed in the years since they left, others felt they had been away too long and politely refused, choosing to instead remain on their isolated colony.
