The Magic Wakes is the first book in the Science Fantasy trilogy of the same name, written by Charity Bradford and published in February 2013.

Talia Zaryn is a scientist with extraordinary abilities who has been plagued with prophetic dreams about the invasion of her planet by a dragon-human hybrid species, followed by her own demise. Talia is forced to move to the city her dreams take place in, where she meets Colonel Landry Sutton, who is investigating the Space Exploration Foundation (SEF) for a mole.

In the meantime, alien wizard Jaron infiltrates the secret organization Signum in search of revenge for his dead wife.

The Magic Wakes contains examples of:

  • Demonic Possession: Downplayed. Jaron lets himself be possessed by a demon, but he keeps the demon locked away so it can't control him.
  • Draconic Humanoid: The Dragumon are human-dragon hybrids.
  • Dragon Rider: Talia and Landry ride on Jewel's back to get back to their ship.
  • Elemental Powers: The mages can have one or more of the elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit.
  • Foreseeing My Death: Played with. None of Talia's lifelong dreams about her own death ever happen.
  • Giant Flyer: Jewel can fly and is large enough to carry two adults on her back.
  • No Immortal Inertia: Jaron becomes an old man and dies of old age as soon as the demon leaves his body.
  • Purpose-Driven Immortality: Jaron extends his life in order to eradicate the Dragumon and dies shortly after they're gone.
  • Science Fantasy: The book has elements of science fiction (space travel, advanced technology, alien invasion) as well as fantasy (magic, dragons and demons).
