La Voragine (from the latin vorāgo - Literally Unbridled Passion, translated to english as "The Vortex") is the second work from Colombian author José Eustasio Rivera. The novel narrates the adventures of poet Arturo Cova and his mistress Alicia in the setting of the Colombian plains and jungles at the second decade of the 20th century.

Widely considered one of the masterpieces of latin-american modernism

La Vorgine provides examples of:

  • Adventure
  • Arranged Marriage: Alicia's parents planned to marry her with an old landowner while she already was in love with Arturo and without telling her until the wedding was near.
  • Kissing Cousins: Alicia tells Arturo that back in Bogota she had fallen in love with a cousin of her, since she said that they even compromised can be assumed that the love was requited.
  • Man Bites Man: Arturo bites Barrera during their final fight.
  • Romance Novel
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Alicia's parents who organized her Arranged Marriage (and in a lesser degree the priest and the judge they hired to make sure the wedding) only are briefly mentioned at the beginning, but they are the reason why Alicia and Arturo escaped, causing all the events of the book.
