The reader controls the newest member of Skywatch, a group that polices their chain of floating islands. When their home is threatened, they are the only ones who can save the day.
Crystal of Storms provides examples of:
- All Up to You: The future of the islands is in the hands of the youngest, most inexperienced member of their peacekeeping organization.
- Behemoth Battle: The player doesn't actually fight the end boss, a giant machine. Instead, they need to give magic potions to a giant so he'll be strong enough to beat it for them.
- Chest Monster: One of your possible encounters is against a "Chest Creature", an animated treasure chest which attacks you.
- Childhood Friends: Your childhood friend (who depends on what island you're from) will act as a sidekick while you visit that island.
- Floating Continent: The entire adventure is set on a series of aerial islands, named the floating archipelago of Pangaria.
- Hyperactive Metabolism: Like in most books, food is used as healing items. Unlike most books, each food item found is tracked separately, and restores a different amount of Stamina.
- Mix-and-Match Critters: One advertised threat is the Great White Squark, a sea predator that's a shark on the top and a squid underneath.
- Power Crystal: What the player's "hovers" run on, and the one keeping the island afloat.
