Heartwarming / Who Pays the Ferryman?

Go To

  • Any moment of interaction between Haldane and Elena, especially after his offer to help with the redevelopment of Elounda. Made rather poignant in that she does not know the real reason why he wants to help, instead seeing it as a gesture of friendship from a foreigner who has strong ties to the area through his heroic war service. Haldane is both touched and pained when she talks of (the man she thinks was) her father, an old wartime comrade of his.
  • The same goes for Haldane's interactions with Alexis, who has no idea that the friendly Englishman who lets him help build the caique is in fact his grandfather.
  • At the Viglis funeral, Annika decides to do the right thing and makes a public gesture of mourning for the deceased. Seconds later, Petros does the same — instantly ending a decades-old blood feud between the two families. All of the villagers, who had been ready to stop the funeral by any means necessary, cross themselves and disperse.
  • Xenophon, for all his boastfulness, comes along to help Haldane rebuild his burned-out caique, and even supplies some of the materials for the job, just because he now sees the Englishman as his friend.
