Heartwarming / Vivo

Go To

  • Vivo's Establishing Character Moment: when he livens up the disinterested crowd. He jumps onto a girl and invites her to take a selfie with the duo.
  • Andrés rescued Vivo when the latter ended up chased by wild dogs in Havana after he fell into a shipping crate to Havana by accident. He plays a gentle guitar melody for him, and Vivo investigates the strings. They bond immediately and Vivo is named for his love of music and lively spirit.
  • After Montoya delivers the letter to Andrés from Marta, the neighbors gather. They are more than supportive of him going to pursue his Old Flame, and start up a collection to fund the trip as Andrés protests that he's too old to fly. One even gushes how romantic it is.
  • When Andrés decides he and Vivo will travel to Miami so he can reconnect with Marta and deliver his song, Vivo gets huffy because he fears he'll be cast aside for Marta. Andrés realizes that Vivo is scared of change, and reassures him that no matter what, they'll always be together. He's not mad when Vivo storms off, knowing that his friend just needs some time to process their vacation/ potentially permanent trip. After cooling down, Vivo, seeing Andrés already asleep in his chair, packs Andres's suitcase as an apology... but when he goes to wake him up the next day and apologize properly, Andrés doesn't.
  • While the funeral is a Tear Jerker, a huge crowd gathers to celebrate Andrés's life. They talk about how they just wanted Andrés to reunite with Marta.
  • One of Andrés's neighbors sees Gabi practicing her recorder. He says that she must have music in her blood, like her great-uncle, and gifts her with Andrés's instruments, saying that Andrés would want her to have them. Rosa isn't thrilled, but Gabi is ecstatic.
  • Gabi notices that Vivo has no one taking care of him after the funeral. She asks her mother if Vivo can come to stay with them in Key West. While her mother says no, Vivo realizes it's Actually a Good Idea if he sneaks into Andres's music case and plans to travel to Miami.
  • What is Gabi's first reaction when she realizes that Vivo is in Andrés' musical case? She screams happily and tries to hug him.
  • Gabi immediately susses Vivo's plan to deliver the sheet music to Miami, to see Marta Sandoval and deliver Andres's song on his behalf, when he shows her it was folded inside his hat. She says that if it's for her Tio Andrés, she's all in to help him get on that bus.
  • Vivo insists that Gabi is not his partner. Yet when a storm separates them, he at first claims that he's worried about the song but who does he call for first when reaching the top of a tree? "GABI!"
  • Vivo helps a spoonbill named Dan confess his feelings to another bird, urging him not to wait until it's too late. It ends up being Androcles' Lion, as Dan later rescues him from Lutador and helps him save Gabi and the Sand Dollars from the snake.
  • Vivo's Let's Get Dangerous! and Papa Wolf reaction when he sees Lutador trying to eat Gabi and the Sand Dollars. Before his response was understandable fear when Lutador attempted to strangle him. But he gains a Death Glare and says that Lutador is no different from a tough crowd in Havana, cleverly tying him up into knots around a tree branch with fancy footwork. No one messes with his kid.
  • After the sheet music is destroyed and Vivo gets depressed and thinks he failed Andrés, Dancarino tries to comfort and encourage him. Dancarino may be a clumsy and funny spoonbill, but in this sad moment, he doesn't do anything funny and instead tries to cheer up and help Vivo. Like when Vivo helped him regain hope in his life by speaking and confessing his love to Valentina.
  • After Vivo complained that he and Gabi were not in sync and are not partners, he and Gabi end up singing a Triumphant Reprise of "Keep The Beat" called "Running Out Of Time" when they finally make it to Miami Beach. Vivo notes that the sun is going down, but the new friends that he has made are giving him hope that they can succeed. He regains his optimism and Gabi uses a borrowed Sand Dollar scooter to navigate the busy sidewalks.
  • When Gabi forces Vivo to leave her behind so that Vivo can deliver the letter, Vivo is reluctant. He only does so when she begs him not to waste this chance, since he can't unlock the padlocked door. Vivo then hears Marta crying, and quietly enters her room. He offers a comforting pat to the shoulder. While she's startled, she recognizes him from the news clipping that reported on Andrés' death and he hands her the recreated sheet music. Marta asks if he traveled all this way for such a precious gift. He nods. Marta thanks him, saying she now has a reason to perform. Later, she finds out that Gabi was involved in delivering the message, and calls her one of her new friends.
  • Vivo returns to Gabi's side, finding her mother's car and using the sunroof to get into the backseat. Gabi is so happy to see him, she gives him a giant hug...which he returns this time. Her mother is forced to admit she was wrong to think Gabi was making it up.
  • Gabi tearfully admits that she went on this quest because her biggest regret was never telling her father that she loved him before he died. Vivo comforts her, knowing how that feels.
  • How does the movie end? With Vivo performing again...only with Gabi this time, who has a customized stereo setup using cardboard and purple paint for the Key West locals and tourists. She reprises "One Of A Kind", and they're in perfect sync. Vivo insisted before that Gabi wasn't his partner, but they're performing like professionals.
    • Gabi is belting at the top of her lungs with full confidence. Vivo teaching her paid off!
    • Even Gabi's mother and the Sand Dollars are joining in, showing they made peace with Gabi's decisions.
    • Marta drops in for a surprise visit, shouting, "Que diga? Presente!" She gives Vivo and Gabi a huge hug as they join in with her, thanking them for delivering Andres's last song.
    • The song ends with Gabi and Vivo singing, "We are one of a kind" before hugging, and the curtains close on the duo.
