    House of Blades

  • It's subtle, but Alin clearly thinks of Simon as his best friend. He always speaks well of him (even if it tends to be in the form of "I know you mean well, but you're too weak"), and Simon is one of the only people who can see through his hero persona.

    Crimson Vault

  • Leah recalls how when her mother died, she ran away from home, and Indirial followed her. Rather than dragging her back to the palace, he sat up with her all night, exchanging stories of her mother. When she woke up in the morning, she was back in her bed, and as far as she knows her father never found out.
  • Once again, Alin's relationship with Simon is surprisingly strong. Not only does he insist on involving Simon in Enosh over the objections of the Grand Masters, but when he finds out that Simon is working with Damasca, he soon realizes that maybe Enosh is wrong. Because he can't believe Simon would ever willingly work for the wrong side, and he's certainly not some spy like the Grand Masters are implying.
  • Simon and Leah meeting back up again. Simon is initially hurt and insulted, but they manage to reconcile over everything that happened, setting the foundation for Simon becoming Leah's strongest ally (and maybe more).

    City of Light

  • The dolls each give Kai a kiss on the forehead as he is dying, one last gesture of kindness.
  • When Leah summons Queen Cynara, her distant ancestress, for the final battle, Alin realizes her recognizes her. Then he summons Ralia, Cynara's long-lost sister, and the two share a tender hug.
  • Alin ultimately sacrifices his freedom and power as an Incarnation to save Simon from Incarnating himself.

    Short stories

  • Queen Cynara, moments after Incarnation, rejects the suggestion to become God Empress of the world and instead seals herself under the first Hanging Tree.
