Heartwarming / The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals

Go To

  • Paul has a good relationship with Bill and Alice, to the point where Bill says that Paul is Alice's Honorary Uncle. He offers to buy coffee as Comfort Food when Bill is involved in a bitter custody battle with his ex-wife over Alice, and alter says he's going to help Bill rescue his daughter.
  • Paul's interactions with Emma are sweet, which makes what eventually happens so much more tragic:
    • While Paul could go to Starbucks on his coffee break, he goes to Beanie's specifically to see Emma. He gives her a five-dollar tip and says she doesn't have to sing or share it with her coworkers. When Emma vents about how she's doing more work for a tip which doesn't make it a tip, he agrees. He admits that he doesn't like musicals, and she asks why come to the singing coffee shop. Paul says sweetly, "Some things are worth it." He covers it up by saying he means the coffee, but Emma gives a small smile.
    • He nearly has a breakdown when it seems that Emma has succumbed to the spontaneous singing. When she reveals it was an extra song under their new mandate, he says with relief that she's talking normally.
    • When he realizes that the world is becoming a musical, he warns Emma while relieved that she wasn't brainwashed after a brief Bait-and-Switch. Emma doesn't believe him, but he pulls her out of the coffee shop when Zoe and the others reveal they spiked the coffee with "blue shit". He then righteously says to Ted that she's staying with them, no questions asked.
    • They have a talk after settling down with alcohol in Hidgens's lab. Emma opens up about how she was a drifter until her overachieving sister died, and Paul mentions that he did see her Brigadoon and that started his hatred of musicals. She jokes that it must mean that she's his supervillain origin story. Paul admits he doesn't think that.
    • Paul doesn't want to leave an injured Emma to stop the apocalypse. She insists that he do it because it's all up to him and she's in no shape to run. They try to do a Big Damn Kiss, but she spits up blood all over him and admits a repeat is a bad idea.
    • The audience applauds and cheers when it seems that Paul survived his Heroic Suicide to blow up the meteor. He reunites with Emma, giving her a hug. You really hate it when he starts singing, and reveals that he did die, but the HIVE resurrected him.
  • The scripted ending reveals that General Schaffer wasn't brainwashed, nor was most of PEIP. She did rescue Emma and reward her with a new identity and deed to a pot farm in Colorado, thanking her for helping stop the apocalypse. Her last scene would have been attempting to fire on a brainwashed Paul to save Emma, only for the brainwashed nurse to bite her neck.
