Cabal's character arc in a nutshell: what would be a Tear Jerker or a cringeworthy moment in The Necromancer becomes Heartwarming instead here.
- Cabal gently calming his brother down after Horst accidentally killed another vampire in a sudden burst of Power Incontinence. It's rather pragmatic - it's still Cabal, after all - but he clearly made an effort.
- Horst later returns the favour when the two are about to split up aboard Rubrum Imperatrix, taking a moment to tell his little brother that he loves him and forgives him for everything that happened.
- Zarenyia's inner monologue, when she realizes that she considers Cabal to be her friend - first friend she ever made, in fact.
- Early during the infiltration, Cabal is struck down, and Zarenyia, Leonie and Miss Smith surround and defend him until he can get back to his feet and find safety. As he gets back up, he takes a moment to reflect on the fact that somehow, he's surrounded by three heavily armed people and for once that's a good thing.
- When Cabal has a brief attack of panic before boarding the Imperatrix, Leonie takes a moment to reassure him that under the circumstances, it's perfectly fine to be afraid, and she's scared too.
